

Roland “Con” Herman Constien, 84, of Marietta, GA, died on Thursday, January 28, 2016. Roland was born January 5, 1932 in Springfield, Illinois to the late Reverend Albert H. and Helen K. Constien. In his early years, he attended Eastern Illinois State Teachers College Elementary School, Trinity Evangelical Lutheran School and Concordia College High School, Fort Wayne IN. Upon graduating from high school he continued his education at Concordia College, Fort Wayne, IN and then pursued his ministerial calling by attending Concordia Seminary in St. Louis, MO. In his last year of seminary, he married the girl of his dreams, Nancy Ann Kaller on August 21, 1955. From 1956 to 1960, he pastored churches in Connersville, IN and Provo, UT. The birth of their 4 children occurred during these years of ministry. In 1961, he chose a different career path by accepting a position at Thiokol Chemical Corporation, Brigham City, UT. The company then transferred Roland and his young family to Brunswick, GA in 1965. The Constien family moved to Marietta, GA later that year, where he began work as a Material and Processes Engineer at Lockheed Aircraft Company. He retired in 1993 after 28 years of service.
Roland enjoyed music tremendously. His passion for singing translated into participating in the Marietta Chorale. He performed with the local theater group, Cobb Community Players, for 10 years. Roland has been a member of Faith Lutheran Church from 1965 until his death. While at Faith, he served in many ministries such as choir director, choir member, usher and lay liturgist. He was known for his great speaking voice and gentle demeanor. Roland was a great example of a godly man to his family.
He is survived by his children, daughter Paula Constien George (of the home) of Marietta; son Reverend Timothy J. Constien, his wife Dale of Douglasville, GA; daughter Christa Constien Eakes and husband B. Tracy Eakes of Matthews, NC; and son Michael D. Constien and his wife Antoinette of Lawrenceville, GA. Also surviving are nine grandchildren: Kevin M. K. George (of the home), Kelly E. M. George of Marietta; Bethany Constien Wheeler and husband Jeff Wheeler of Dallas, GA; Whitney Constien of Douglasville, GA; Alesa Constien of Rome, GA; Rachel and Rebekah Eakes of Matthews, NC; Ashlyn and Keaton Constien of Lawrenceville, GA and one great-grandchild Nora Kate Wheeler of Dallas, GA. He is survived by two brothers and one sister: Dr. Victor A. Constien and wife Dorothy of St. Louis, MO; Neva Constien Krueger of Palos Park, IL; Reverend Arthur J. Constien and wife Edith of Maywood, IL. He is preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Nancy Kaller Constien, his sister Norma Ann Constien and his parents.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 13, 2016 at 11:00 am at Faith Lutheran Church in Marietta. A private burial service will be held on Friday, February 12. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Music Education Department at Faith Lutheran School, 2111 Lower Roswell Road, Marietta, GA.
