Roland was a loving husband to his current wife Diane Lucille Seidel for 6 years and to his first wife who he lost to cancer in 2007, Jeanette Erlene Seidel for 50 years. Roland and Jeanette raised 3 sons. Roland, Michael and Robert. Together they had 6 Grandchildren and 5 Great Grandchildren. Roland escaped from East Germany in 1953 in hopes for a better life in America. He joined the Army and was a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne, 325 infantry. As he could hardly speak and understand English, he made it all the way through basic training, jump school and parachuted in to Korea. A little late, but the Army realized he was not an American citizen. Understanding this could have created quite an incident, him being a German in an American uniform in Korea, so they had to rectify the situation quickly. They asked Roland who the American President was at the time, and what form of government we had. Of course he knew the answers, so the Army made him a U. S. Citizen while serving in Korea.
Roland also had a full life with his career. He was a machinist by trade from Germany, but achieved more than most. He spent the bulk of his life supporting top engineers awarding him a U.S. Patton while at AT&T where he worked and successfully retired after 27 years. After losing his first wife of 50 years and grieving her, visiting her grave every day for years, he finally moved to Orlando, Florida where he could golf and travel without having to fight the tough winters any longer. In Florida, Roland was granted a gift that so few ever get in life. He met a wonderful lady, Diane Lucille Aldrich who was a widower like him. The two of them hit it off and were soon married. Roland and Diane traveled the world, went on many cruises together which was their favorite way to travel. Unfortunately, for all of us, not for him, he passed away peacefully in his sleep in the Caribbean on 12/9/16.
Roland has always been a model citizen and the poster child of what a person, father, and husband should be. Respectful, honorable, honest, hardworking, strong, and very brave. He loved America more than anyone I have ever met! America owes him a debt of gratitude, because “We the People” are better because he was here… God Bless you Pop
