Summer is here and I think of you so often, there were so many things we did together during this time of year. Fishing was of course one of them.  We had several fishing trips that are all memorable in their own right; I will send you a few notes of reminiscence about the more memorable times we spent on or near the water.

In the summer on 1980 we decided we were going to go surf fishing.  We selected the Eastern shore of Maryland for our destination, between Ocean City and Assateague Island. We picked the date, invited my friend Larry to go along, and set the plan in motion. 
 
We decided to leave early Saturday morning after I finished work. I was working the swing shift from 8:00 pm to 4:00 am in DC.  The plan was to be on the road by 5:00 am, fishing by 9:00 am.  We would spend Saturday night; get in a little fishing Sunday, then head home late Sunday afternoon.  Sounded like a good plan.

You stayed in my apartment the night before so we could head out from there in the morning.  I was able to get out of work a little early and woke you up to get us going.  Larry lived in the same apartment complex, so getting to him should have been easy. Unfortunately Larry was not awake and we couldn't get him to answer the door, so we just had to wait until he showed up.  We packed your red Plymouth Challenger (with the white vinyl top) with fishing gear, tent, and all the other stuff we needed to camp and fish.  Larry brought his father's Coleman cooler for us to use, with the admonition that we had to keep it clean! Once loaded – we were off!

We had tons of exuberance on the trip up, listening to music and talking about the flounder and blue fish we were going to catch, maybe even a shark.  We planned to stop at the bait and tackle store to ask about what bait to use and get some salt water appropriate tackle.  Everyone knows you cannot go on a fishing trip without new tackle!  The tackle shop we selected said we needed blood worms and squid, so that is what we got.

Late morning we had arrived at our first fishing spot, somewhere between Ocean City and Assateague.  You and I had borrowed some surf casting rods and were soon fishing away from the beach.  Larry had a standard freshwater rig he had borrowed from his dad, and it didn't have the length to have the leverage to cast out far enough. On top of that the reel kept getting fouled and he spent the better part of the day untangling a mess.  He finally gave up and spent the last few hours of the day sitting on his dad's cooler, wrapped from the waist down in a towel getting scorched.  You and I both had a good base tan when we started the trip, Larry was lily white. By the end of the day he was lobster red. More on that one later.
Between you and I we caught a flounder and a small sand shark.  We even left the shark on the line and cast him back out a few times just so we could reel him back in. Kind of pathetic, but we wanted to have some real fishing action.  We must have cut up half a dozen squid and squished who knows how many blood worms.  Still we had fun fishing.  But fishing was only half the fun.

Once we packed up for the day we headed out to find a spot to camp.  We ended up at a camp ground just off the beach near where we had been fishing.  We set up our tent to reserve our spot, changed out of our swim suits and headed in to Ocean City for dinner.  Larry was miserable with his sunburn. We stopped at the first place we could and he bought some Solarcane.  The entire rest of the trip we could hear him in the back seat ‘psssst', ‘psssst', as he sprayed on relief in a can about every 15 minutes. Poor guy.

We went to a place the served crabs on the boardwalk and you and I had blue crab. Larry had never had it before, so he picked at a few but really didn't eat much.  We had some beer, talked a little too loud about our day and the plans for Sunday, and then headed back to the camp site because Larry was too sick to head anywhere to get a beer.

The next day we headed back to the beach to fish some more, Larry took up his perch from the previous day on his dad's cooler.  By this time the cooler had only some water from the melted ice in it and our leftover squid from the day before.  It smelled awful.  Larry was fit to be tied, we had virtually ruined the cooler.

We ended up heading back earlier than we expected.  Larry was really ill, the fish weren't biting, and staying at the beach to just hang out wasn't an option because Larry was so burned.  I will say that the further we got from the beach the happier Larry seemed to become.  He didn't even seem to mind when we came to a complete stop at the bay bridge on the way back due to all the beach traffic.
That is about it for that trip.

I will recount another trip or two soon. It is hard to believe that it was as long ago as it has been, some of the memories are so clear they seem to have happened just yesterday.  Rest well my friend.

My friend it has now been a year since you left us.  I have not had one day pass that I did not think of you, wishing you were still here.  So many things happen that remind me of you, make we want to reach out and talk with you.  Just as it has been these nearly 37 years I find myself thinking of something and wanting to share it with you.  We had so many things we did and talked about.
In our younger days we talked of the future, and the present, mostly about things we were doing that were enjoyable.  Later in life we became more serious, but still had quite a bit of fun left in us.  The time I spent traveling to Atlanta for work, we were able to get together on the weekends for fishing and a few weeknights for dinner, or fun at Dave and Buster's playing pool.  It was really great being together again.
When work brought me to Atlanta again a few years ago we were able to once again get together for dinner at your place.  I picked us up some steaks and beer, you grilled us a great meal.  We had a few beers, and then later you fixed me one of ‘Scott's famous 1-2-3 Magaritas'.  We sat on your front porch, sipped our drinks, and had cigars. It was so comfortable talking with you, being around you, just like it always was with us.  
No matter how long it had been, no matter what the subject, we always had a smooth, comfortable flow of conversation, and when the conversation ebbed, we shared what I have found is the rare ability for 2 friends to spend together comfortably in silence. We were never really lacking for things to jaw about, but when things were winding down we didn't have to search for things to fill the gap.
Scott, you were my longest and dearest friend, a brother of sorts as I have said before.  Ha, we are actually blood brothers.  One time you insisted and we cut our thumbs and mingled our blood!  We were really a pair the two of us.  
Even though I am behind on posting things to your memorial site, I think of you all the time.  It is hard to not have you around to talk to.  Rest easy my friend, my brother.

Mr. Scott I was thinking of you today since it has been almost a year since you left us. You were like a second father to me, and I have so many fond memories of family trips with you, Sherry, and Katie. You were the guy that always encouraged exploration, and I loved that about you! You always knew how to put a smile on my face when I was down, and I loved the way you pinched my shoulders and made a silly noise asking, "What's going on kiddo?" Our father daughter camping trips were always a blast too! I looked forward to those every year. I especially loved throwing the football around with you. You taught me how to live life with my eyes fully opened! Truly appreciating and experiencing what this life has to offer. Thank you for taking me into your family and treating me as a second daughter. You are missed by me and my family, but we know that you are LIVING life to the fullest in the overwhelming peace that Heaven has to offer. Thank you for the wonderful memories you left with us, the lessons, and for being such a fun person to be around. I love you, and I know you are one of my newest guardian angels. :)

Happy Birthday Daddy, I miss you so much and want you to know that we are honoring your birthday by going to the Greek place, the place that we celebrated time and time again while you were alive and I know that you will be there with us tonight. I love you.

Happy birthday to you my friend.  What a day this would have been.  It is 12-12-12, the last time we would have seen a numerical sequence like this in our lifetimes.  I know you were intrigued by math and numerical sequences. Lisa and I miss you, as do so many others.  I think about you every day, and wish you were still here.

Thank you so much for the phone calls, emails, thoughts, and prayers.  Six weeks ago, a very special child of God was taken from us.  He enriched our lives like nobody else could or ever will, and we will love him forever. Hello Scott.  It has been one month today since you left us. I cannot express the depth of my sorrow knowing that you are gone.  You were the closest thing to a brother to me that I have ever had, and I loved you very much my friend.

I am in a state of disbelief that you are actually gone.  The entire time we have known each other you always seemed to be so happy, filled with joy and mischief.  There are so many things that we did together during that time of our coming of age that it seems so surreal to have survived the numerous escapades of our youth only to have you pass at the oh so young age of 56, when we have settled into adulthood.  You left us far too soon.  It is almost like a Neil Young song, to have you here…and thedays of our youth gone.  I know he was your favorite artist.

I have so many memories of the things we did together, yet the most compelling memory I have is of a conversation we had only a few months ago.  You had written to tell me that you had started having new thoughts about salvation, and beginning to understand the wonderful gift that Christ has provided for us.  In the past we had discussed the topic and you were not in agreement about it, you felt that being given the gift regardless of what you did to ‘earn' it was not right.  You have always been the kind of person that wanted to make your own way, be fully responsible for your actions, and the gift that God provided in the death of Jesus was not something you could get your head around.  I think that you finally allowed your heart and your spirit to let your consciousness know that God did what we cannot do, and I fully believe that you understood God's grace and accepted Jesus.  This is certainly my fervent wish for you, because I cannot imagine a heaven without you in it with me when I arrive.

As I have told you on numerous occasions the last few years I occasionally drive out Interstate 66 past Haymarket, past the area where we once camped, just the 2 of us.  We had camped at a rocky spot on the small mountain that you had previously ‘discovered', and you told me you named it ‘Scott's Outlook'.  Driving past it brings back the memory of that trip, of your flair for life, and the good times we had when we were so very, very young.  I have taken pictures of it and sent them to you, and you recognized it without hesitation.  I hope your memories of that mountain were as good as mine were.

It is with so much sadness that I leave this post to you my friend, knowing that it will go unread for you are no longer there to read it.  I am so sorry.

I love you Scott, and will always love you.  God speed my friend, until we meet again in heaven.

I just wanted you to know that because I never told you. I took the bracelet that you made for Natalie and put it on "Jocko" the monkey, the one that Dad replaced for Mom, you know the one that you cut all of the hair off of when you were a kid? It will stay there forever. I will always carry our memories in my heart. You were such a wonderful uncle. You will truly be missed not only because you were a wonderful father and husband but because you were a man of respect and honor. 

I love you so much Sherry and Katie. May you find peace in the Lord and know that you are always in my heart and prayers.
