Around the age of 5, Kas moved with his parents and older sister Irene, to Chicago, IL. His family lived downtown where he was raised in the Catholic church. He graduated from Wells High School in 1964 and apprenticed in a stained glass shop as a teenager.
In 1965, he joined the United States Marine Corps. For his first permanent duty, he was stationed in Cherry Point, NC. He was later assigned to aircraft squadron VMGR 152 serving as a Propeller Mechanic and receiving advanced training in that field. Kas was transferred overseas to Okinawa, Japan to VMGR 152, as part of the buildup to the war in Vietnam. His tour lasted 13 months where he routinely rotated in and out of Vietnam. He performed any necessary maintenance on C-130 aircrafts at Da Nang Air Base to prepare them for flight back to Okinawa. He volunteered to go into Khe Sanh Combat Base to retrieve the props off a C-130 that was downed on the runway. When his tour was over, Kas rotated back to the United States to be stationed at MCAS El Torro, California where he finished out his last year of military service.
Kas first moved to the Atlanta, Georgia area after receiving a job offer at Lockheed Martin where he went to work as an Aircraft Mechanic. Kas moved on to a few different jobs before entering into contract construction work where he was an integral part of several small companies working with sheet metal jobs all over the southeast. After meeting his wife, Martha, he eventually formed his own company, Kasco & Sons, Inc, and focused on jobs in the Atlanta area. He retired from contracting to work as a customer service representative at Home Depot where he enjoyed using his diverse experience to assist people with their projects.
Kas’ hobbies included fishing, golf, model trains, house projects, building Christmas displays (elaborate exterior lights and miniature villages), and, most of all, traveling. Kas was a member of the Marine Corps Air Transport Association and a loyal member at Johnson Ferry Baptist Church. He also contributed donations and time to Church Builders where he volunteered on many projects.
