Well, My Beloved, you have earned your rest. Your journey through this life has come to an end, but you leave behind so many precious memories, so many happy thoughts and so many blessings. All who crossed your path were blessed to be in your presence.  Your grace, humility, tenacity, and strength have set the bar high for those of us left. We can only hope to live the exemplary life that you did.

Thelma, I thank you for choosing me to be your mother. I grew in ways you cannot imagine because of it. I just pray that I lived up to the sacred responsibility of being the mother of an Angel, which you were, I have no doubt.

I know you are at peace now. No more suffering, no more fear, no more discomfort.

Yours was a life well-lived.

Your greatest joy in life was your nephews and nieces. You loved each as your own. You supported, worried, encouraged, and loved them all. Nothing was too good for them. They were your children. You showed up for school programs, games concerts, and competitions whenever it was possible. They loved you also and bared their souls to you. They accompanied you to games, concerts, outings, the nail salon and took turns spending the night during your hospital stays. They sought advice from you, which was always sound and to the point. Their lives revolved around you and your needs. Their only regret, I’m sure, is that they could not have done more. They will be lost for a while, like a ship without a rudder.

I will be remised to not motion your love of the Atlanta Falcons. You were truly their #1 fan. Game-day was sacred to you. You watched the pre-game, the after show, and review the games during the week in preparation for the next game. The Falcons have no idea what a wonderful supporter you were. I have no doubts in my mind that you could have coached that team to a super bowl win.  Anything with a dirty bird on it somehow found its way to our doorstep.  You never grow tired of the Falcons and like everything else in your life you were committed and dedicated to them to the end.

The past 23 years have been full of joy and pain. You endured it all with grace, dignity, and humility. I only hope that I gave you as much joy over the years as you gave to me and this family. Ironically, I was 40 years old when you became paralyzed. You were 40 years old when you transitioned.

Thelma, you always knew what you wanted and anyone that stood in your way was going to be dealt with. A threat to sue the Fulton county school district about your rights to an education, a letter to Bill Campbell, the Mayor of Atlanta, regarding handicapped inaccessibility, a letter to the president of Georgia Perimeter College, regarding the slow response to your emails, which impacted your ability to finish your degree are just examples of the fights you were willing to engage in to ensure that you and others in your condition were treated with respect and afforded the same opportunities to peruse your dreams. You never backed down and would have taken your cases to the Supreme Court if need be.  

While perusing your degree in Psychology, you endured long trips to campus which often left you short of breath from the jolts of the ride, but you never complained and were never deterred. If you set your mind to it, you were going to see it through, no matter what. Nothing and no one ever deterred you from your goals. Including me. If I didn’t agree with something, you found a way to get it done without me. Including all those beautiful tattoos.  


My beautiful, loving daughter, THELMA ROCHELLE MCGHEE.   I was introduced to you forty years ago at Pima community Hospital in Tucson Arizona. You were born with full command of your head and you looked around the hospital with wonder and excitement in your eyes. The staff and I marveled at you. 

Thelma, as a child, you were so inquisitive and always had to know the who, what, when, where, and why of everything and every situation you encountered. This would earn you the nickname of FBI at an early age. You were bold, sure of yourself, witty, smart, funny, and a leader. So much so, that in the fourth grade I was advised to consider counseling on how to raise a child with such strong leadership abilities. You ran things, you commanded the room and you were never afraid to voice your opinion.

You were a joy to be around. Full of life, wisdom beyond your years, self sufficient, funny, and never afraid to try new things.  I remember the day that the Chemistry periodic tables clicked in you head.   You were so excited you screamed with joy.  You were often bored in school because you absorbed information like a magnet. You loved learning new things. You were generous beyond a fault.  I will never forget the green jacket you bought me with your first check.  I’m sure you spent your whole check on it but you knew I didn’t have one at the time.  You bought me so many thoughtful gifts over the years. 

On that unfortunate night in 1997, my prayer was for God to not take my child from me. That prayer was granted because rather than visiting a gravesite for the past 23 years, I was able to love you, care for you and watch you grow into an amazing woman. When you woke from your coma, we made a pact that if you were willing to endure this hardship, I would be there for you until the end.

I didn’t spend a lot of time around Thelma, but one thing that sticks out about her is how she cared for her Mom. I was visiting once when they lived in Memphis, and I watched her pack a lunch for her MOM TO TAKE TO WORK, HER MOM WAS HEADING TO THE DOOR AND SHE RUSHED AFTER HER TO GIVE HER THE BAG LUNCH, AND HER SMILE.
“THOSE WHO HAVE BROUGHT US JOY, MADE US LAUGH, AND SHOWN US LOVE HAVE GIVEN US THE LASTING GIFTS OF A BEAUTIFUL LIFE AND BLESSED OUR MEMORIES FOREVER.   THELMA”

My beloved niece, who showed everyone who knew her, that failure was NEVER an option.  That in spite of everything life handed her, she never lost her faith.  Knowing Thelma, knowing her faith in God, I have no Doubt, that she is safe, safe, free and rejoicing, because, her battle is over,  she earned her crown and now  watch over her family, leading, guiding, directing, just as she always did in her  loving way.

You will forever be in our hearts.

We always called each other by our middle names. I would look forward to you bragging about them Dirty Birds, while you gave me a hard time abut Dem Cowboys.  I learned what “don’t quit” & “no excuses” meant from you. Your heart was as big as TEXAS and your competitive nature was unsurpassed by anyone. I am going to miss you my dear cousin. Rest In Power

We had our lives planned out after High School. We were going to Spellman together, sharing a dorm together and we were going to experience college and find ourselves, the sky was the limit. It's been hard to go on in life without my biggest cheerleader by myside.
Your courage, determination, will power and fait have blessed and inspired many. I thank you for your guidance, the laughs and support. Thank you for the unconditional love, and the memories most of all thank you for being you and being my cousin and friend. 

Everytime I hear the song “this little light of mine” I think about granny.  It gives me strength, Faith, the courage and determination to be all that I can be.  And no matter what the circumstance is never let anyone or anything dim your light shine you lived your life that way you were my Living Proof. 

So go sweet Angel,

A wonderful young lady full of courage and spirit. Always eager to learn and help. Thelma helped me years ago by showing me over the internet how to embed images into a document.  What a help she was to me.  She always had a smile on her face and those big beautiful inquisitive eyes made my day whenever I visited their home.  She is missed, but will remain in our hearts today, tomorrow and forever.  Virginia, you were the light of her life. In you she saw Christ's love for her.  Momma often talked about your dedication to her. She is safe in Christ's presence with momma, daddy, Antonio, Hattie , Arrell , Joanne, and a great cloud of  saints.  She is shining bright and made  whole again in GOD'S hands. Love  Fay
