A graduate of Southern Illinois University, Tom built a life centered on people — family, friendships, laughter and shared adventures. He was preceded in death by his parents, Myra and Carl Means, and by his beloved son, Jason, whom he carried in his heart always.
Tom was the adored husband of Joan for 63 wonderful years, a remarkable partnership filled with devotion, laughter and countless stories gathered along the way. He is also survived by his son: Jeff (Virginia); grandsons: Grant (Kai) and Tyler; brother Gordon “Doc” (Sue); nieces: and nephews: Erin (Scott), Megan (Heath), Zoe (Jim), Billy (Jenn) and Hannah (Andy). Together they built a family and a life rich in love, travel and treasured traditions.
To know Tom was to know kindness. He had a kind spirit, a warm smile and a knack for making people feel comfortable. He never passed up the opportunity for a good laugh, whether it came from one of his stories or a perfectly timed joke.
Tom was a successful business man filled with entrepreneurial spirit and was happy to provide advice to anyone who asked.
Tom’s passions reflected his approach to life. He loved tennis, boating, water sports and history — and he was rarely without a book nearby.
He also loved to travel the world with family and friends.
More than anything, Tom will be remembered for the way he made people feel: welcomed, valued and loved. His life was a reminder to enjoy the journey, laugh often and cherish the people beside you.
He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who were fortunate enough to know him.
