Thurston "Bud" Leon Flynn, beloved husband and father, died June 15, 2011 in Cary, NC at his residence. He was born in San Diego, CA on December 12, 1930 to Mary Modeste Brown and Leo Angus Flynn.
Bud was preceded in death by his wife of 46 years, Joan Eleanor Flynn. Bud is survived by his daughter, Alexandra E. Flynn (Scott Stonefield) of Apex, NC; son Douglas V. Flynn (Trina) of Marietta, GA; son Mark A. Flynn (Kim) of Dallas, GA. He is also survived by grandchildren: Jeremy Bost and Ian Stonefield of Apex, NC; Ellie and Isabelle Flynn of Marietta, GA; David Ficalore.
Bud was known for his lifelong love and pride for his country. He served with honor in the U.S. Navy from 1948-1968 (Retired C.P.O. 1st Class), and continued working with the United States Government at the Naval Air Station in Marietta, GA until his retirement. While stationed in Puerto Rico in 1961, Bud met the love of his life, Joan Maldonado. They married after a three month romance, and were together for 46 years until Joan passed in April, 2007. Together, they moved across the country, raising three children and finally settling into retirement in Holly Springs, NC.
We will miss hearing those "Navy" stories. Bud was a warm, kind man, and a special "Papa" to us all. A talented metalsmith and jeweler, Bud gave gifts of his beautiful creations to many. He was proud of all his children, and passed his jewelry talent to his two sons. He loved being a grandfather and adored his grandchildren. Bud made friends easily and enjoyed a good game of chess and backgammon. He will be missed, but it eases our hearts to know he is once again with his love, Joan.
A memorial service will be held 10:00 am at Georgia Memorial Park, 2000 Cobb Pkwy SE, Marietta, GA 30060. Bud's family would like to thank the staff of Woodland Terrace Verra Springs, Hospice of Wake County, and special caregiver Michelle Norris, who gave him so much comfort the last few months of his life. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Wake County (http://www.buildhospice.org).
