Verona Mae (Shoemaker) Reed, 79, of Marietta, GA, went to her eternal home on January 20, 2022, after a brief illness. Verona was the only daughter of Luther & Minnie Shoemaker. She grew up in Indianapolis, IN and was an active member of Tuxedo Park Baptist Church. She graduated from Howe High School in 1960. Later that year, she married Richard (Dick) Reed. She worked at a variety of jobs including the IRS, the draft board and a pediatrician’s office before becoming a stay-at-home mom. Dick’s work moved the family from Greenwood, IN, to Cooper City, FL where Verona was the President of the Cooper City Women’s Club. And from FL, the family moved to Marietta, GA in 1977. She returned to the workforce in 1979, working for Seaboard Supply, and then for the parent company NSI (National Service Industries), now Acuity Brands, Inc. She retired from Acuity Brands, Inc. in 2008.
Verona loved Jesus and shared His love with those she met. She was actively involved in the Music Ministry at Eastside Baptist Church, singing in the choir, working with the children’s choir and acting as a chaperone on many choir tours. In addition, she was involved in weekly Bible Studies and luncheon groups. She loved an adventure and having a good time – day trips with the “Disco Girls” and her annual Spring Break beach trip with long-time friends were not to be missed.
Verona loved her family and anytime she could have them all together, Thanksgiving at the beach with the whole family was her favorite. Those times were filled with hugs, laughter, food and games of all sorts, but especially card games. She loved spending time with her grandchildren, planning week-long “Reed Camp” at her house each summer with all 10 of the grandkids together. She was faithful and loyal, loving unconditionally, with grace, kindness and generosity and always without judgement.
She was preceded in death by her parents Luther and Minnie Shoemaker, her brothers Albert, Raymond and Glenn Shoemaker. She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Richard (Dick) Reed, her children, Doug (Dawn) Reed of Canton, GA; Michele (Brent) McBride of Saltillo, MS; Jeff Reed of Winston-Salem, NC; and Wendy (Chris Segal) Wilson of Marietta, GA; 10 grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild and her brother, Robert (Syble) Shoemaker, and sisters-in-law Cherie, Helen and Pat Shoemaker.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, January 25, at Eastside Baptist Church in Marietta, GA (www.followeastside.com) at 12:00pm. Visitation will be prior to the service, from 10 am to 11:45am.
