

He was born January 5, 1934 in McDowell County, NC to the late Caleb P. and Ella Lee Ward Hogan. Mr. Hogan was a proud veteran of the U.S. Army and served as a cannoneer in Battery D of the division’s 57th Antiaircraft Artillery Battalion. After leaving the Army, he worked in textiles most of his life. He had been a member of Bethel Baptist Church for 64 years where he served as deacon and former Sunday School Teacher and training union director. He enjoyed gardening and raising vegetables and he especially loved his family.
In addition to his parents, he is also preceded in death by several brothers and sisters.
Surviving Mr. Hogan are his wife of over 63 years, Shirley Hogan, who he lovingly referred to as his “Sweetheart”; one son, Chris Hogan and wife, Kay of Elk Park, NC; one daughter, Debra Morgan and husband, Tony of Glenwood; two brothers, Frank Hogan and wife, Janie of SC and Perry Hogan of Spruce Pine, NC; two sisters, Lillian Ray and Jean Mace both of Marion, NC; three grandchildren, Caleb Hogan and wife, Dana, Kristen Atkins and husband, Jonathan and Casey Hartley and wife, Jamie; five great-grandchildren, Jonathan David Atkins, Judah Atkins, Paisley Atkins, Makayla Hartley and Noah Hartley; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family received friends from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM on Monday, July 25, 2016 at Kirksey Funeral Home in Marion. A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, July 26, 2016 at Bethel Baptist Church with Rev. Jimmy Upton and Bro. Jonathan Atkins officiating. Mr. Hogan will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service at the church. Burial will follow the service at Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery with military honors provided by Rutherford County Honor Guard.
