
Grady Paul Johnson, age 92 of the Glenwood community, was called home with outstretched arms to rejoice with our Savior on Thursday, January 16, 2014. A native of Avery County, he was born on February 5, 1921 to the late Lenzy Johnson and Margaret Benfield Johnson. Mr. Johnson was preceded in death by brothers Ray and Harold Johnson and Earl Benfield, and a sister Cleola Morgan.
Mr. Johnson was employed by the North Carolina Department of Transportation as a Maintenance Supervisor until his retirement. He enjoyed riding his “little orange” Kubota tractor. Paul lived a life sharing the good news and passion for the word of Christ. He wanted everyone to know about Jesus.
He is survived by his wife Ruby Marlow Johnson, daughter Diane Roper and husband Colen of Marion; brothers C.W. Johnson and wife of Taylorsville, John Johnson and wife Maudie of Nebo, and Junior Johnson of Taylorsville. One brother-in-law, Jack Marlow and wife Nancy of Reidsville survives. A sister, Helen Braswell and husband Charles of Maiden also survives.
Two grandchildren; April Johnson and husband Heath and Jennifer Retamal and husband Mauricio with grandchildren Sebastian and Matias Retamal also survive Mr. Johnson.
Funeral services will be conducted on Sunday, January 19, 2014 at McCall Memorial Chapel of Kirksey Funeral Home in Marion at 3:00 PM with Rev. Cy Miller officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services at the funeral home beginning at 2:00 PM. Burial will follow the services at Glenwood Cemetery with military honors.
