Mr. James Ellis Buchanan, Sr., 82, of Nebo, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, November 5, 2013 at his residence. Born April 29, 1931, in Mitchell County, Jim was a son of the late Jeter Buchanan and Maude Howell Buchanan. In addition to his parents, Jim was also preceded in death by a sister, Nina Jones. He was a charter member of Eastside Baptist Church which is now called Nebo Crossing.
He served his Country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. Jim retired from Marion Fabrics after having served with over 18 year’s perfect attendance. He will be remembered as having a great sense of humor and a loving man to his family and friends and an avid Washington Redskins fan.
His memory will be cherished by his loving wife of 53 years, Maxine Vivian Peters Buchanan, of the residence; son, Jim Buchanan, Jr., of the residence; daughter, Teena Melia and husband, Reverend Tony Melia, of Portsmouth, VA; brother, Billy Ray Buchanan and wife, Pauline, of Bryson City, NC; three sisters, Gladys Hall, of Marion, Betty Buchanan and husband Ray, of Bakersville, and Marilyn Owensby, of Marion; a grandson, A.J. Melia, of Portsmouth, VA; granddaughter, Cammisa Hernandez and husband, Simon, of Norfolk, VA; great grandson, Julian Nicholas Hernandez and great granddaughter, Jasmin Viviana Hernandez, both of Norfolk, VA; and a host of nieces and nephews will also cherish his memory.
Funeral Services for Mr. Buchanan will be held at 2:00 PM, Saturday, November 9, 2013, at Nebo Crossing in Nebo with Pastor Bob Ritter and Reverend Les Green officiating. Interment will follow at the McDowell Memorial Park in Marion with full Military Rites provided by the North Carolina National Guard and the Caldwell County Veterans Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends Friday evening, November 8th from 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM at Kirksey Funeral Home in Marion.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Mr. Buchanan’s memory to Hospice of McDowell County, 575 Airport Rd., Marion, NC 28752.
