

James Calvin Staton “JC” of Pleasant Gardens age ninety, quietly passed into his Heavenly Father’s arms on Sunday July 3, 2016. A native of McDowell County, he was born on June 2, 1926 to the late Bill and Maggie B. Staton.
He enlisted in the Navy at the young age of 18 years old and proudly served his country from May 1944 until May of 1946. During this time he served on the USS New York during WWII as a Seaman Second Class. He was awarded the: American Area Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Medal (2 stars), and the Victory Medal – World War II.
After his time in the service he returned home where he found the Love of his life Frances Hennessee and was married on June 17, 1951. He then started his career at Old Fort Finishing, but he found his true passion and career as the Building Inspector for McDowell County where he served the residents and businesses of McDowell County for thirty plus years. He was a Master Mason of Joppa Lodge No. 401 Old Fort, NC for over 60 years and was a past master several times. Also a charter member of the Pleasant Gardens Fire Department (Retired Volunteer with over 20 years of service, and Pleasant Gardens Ruritan Club.
Those of us who were privileged to know him knew of his love for his family and friends. In his younger years he loved to fish, golf, and was an avid baseball fan that loved to watch his grandson’s games.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife Frances Staton of 65 years; Son Danny E. Staton (Cindy); Grandsons: Jeremy Staton (Amanda), Tyler Staton; Two Great Granddaughters: Addison Staton and Samantha Staton; A special niece/daughter Frances Hollifield (Tony), their children Ben Hollifield (Nancy), Courtney Ward (Eric); Son-in-Law Michael Sheriff; Brother Fred Staton, and Sister Barbara McKinney. He was preceded in death by his daughter Danette Staton Sheriff.
A celebration of life will be held at Pleasant Gardens Baptist Church on Wednesday July 6, 2016 at 3:00 pm. The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m. prior to the service at the church. Burial with military honors will follow at McDowell Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Pleasant Gardens Baptist Church (Fishers of Men Sunday School Group).
