Richard “Pop” Tipton, age 93, of Old Fort, NC, went to be with the Lord Friday, November 12, 2010 at John F. Keever Solace Center.
He was born on September 4, 1917 in McDowell County, NC to the late Elzie Tipton and Panthy Lowery Tipton. Mr. Tipton was lovingly known as “pop”, and was a life-long member of the VFW and a life-long member of Old Fort Wesleyan Church. He was a WWII veteran of the United States Navy and was involved in the European Theater Normandy France Invasion. Mr. Tipton also owned and operated a produce stand in Old Fort.
In addition to his parents, he is also preceded in death by his sister, Beulah Smallwood and his grandsons, Justin Tipton and Lee Tipton.
Surviving Mr. Tipton are four sons, Ronald Tipton and wife, Mary Ann Tipton, Gary Tipton of the home, Gregory Tipton and wife, Teresa of Old Fort and Kenneth Tipton and wife, Donna of Old Fort six grandchildren, Marc Tipton, Heather Long, Ryan Tipton, Ashley Carmack, Corey Tipton and Dwayne Childers; five great-grandchildren, Alex Tipton, Gabrielle Tipton, Camryn Long, Hudson Long and Ceara Carmack; and a special family friend, Larry Effler of the home.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM until 3:00 PM on Monday, November 15, 2010 at the Old Fort Wesleyan Church. Funeral services will follow at 3:00 PM at the Old Fort Wesleyan Church with Rev. Richard Stanley and Rev. David Johnson officiating. Burial will follow at Cherry Springs Memorial Park
