Starlin Bennett Sowers

He was born on June 28, 1926 in Yancey County, NC to the late John Bost Sowers and Gertrude Florence Autrey Sowers. Mr. Sowers was a veteran of the US Navy serving in World War II.

He was employed and retired from Drexel Furniture Company after 43 years of service. He attended Rocky Pass Freewill Baptist Church for over 54 years, served as a Deacon for over 20 years, and enjoyed singing in the church choir. Mr. Sowers loved to fish and hunt. While at Autumn Care of Marion he enjoyed playing bingo with his friends. Along with his many blessings, he enjoyed being with family and playing with grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife Betty Jean Padgett Sowers. Surviving Mr. Sowers are one son; Roy Dean Sowers and wife Teresa of Marion, daughters; June Burnett and husband Jim of Morganton, NC and Deborah S. O’Brien and husband Robert of Redwood City, CA, one brother, Billy W. Sowers of Victorville, CA, three grandchildren; Jennifer Garrison and husband James of Clemmons, NC, Matthew Sowers and wife Andrea of Greer, SC and Taylor Sowers. Two great grandchildren also survive; Cody and Caleb Garrison.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, February 18, 2014 at 2:00 PM at Rocky Pass Freewill Baptist Church with the Reverands Alan Sailors, Milton Hollifield and Doug Carpenter officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services from 1:00 PM until 2:00 PM at the church. Burial will follow the services at the church cemetery.
