IN THE CARE OF

Myers Funeral Home

Fred E. Cunningham, Jr., 80 of Markle passed away on Monday, May 11, 2020 at his residence. Fred was a 1958 graduate of Huntington High School. He served in the United States Marine Corp. from 1960 – 1964 and was sent to Okinawa where he learned some Japanese, he was in the reserves from 1964 - 1966. Fred had worked as a banker at Lincoln National Bank, Norwest Bank and Wells Fargo Bank from 1966 – 1989. Fred loved playing chess with his grandsons and loved watching them play basketball, he loved spending time with them and going to all of their events. He was extremely proud of them. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, archery and bowling. He was a marksman at shooting the rifle. He was one point from expert. Some of Fred’s strengths were he never gave up, he followed through on things, and he got the job done right the first time. He was honest, dependable, loyal and helpful. When Fred met God, he wanted to tell him that he loves him, he wanted God to watch over his family and friends, and he wants God to help the world, because it is a mess right now. Advice my grandpa would give is think before you open your mouth, tell someone you are sorry because it could be the last time you see them, and help others when you can. Fred was baptized with his daughter. His favorite music was the Marine Corp Hymn. Fred was born on March 18, 1940 in Huntington, the son of Fred E. and Nellie (Virginia) (Parrett) Cunningham, Sr. He was united in marriage to Betty L. Platt on February 25, 1967 at the Buckeye Christian Church in Markle. They were married for 50 years before she passed away. Betty preceded him in death on March 19, 2017. Survivors include a daughter: Barbara (James) Macy of Ossian; a sister: Bonnie Kratz of Huntington and two grandsons: Joseph M. Macy and Jacob N. Macy both of Ossian. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister: Beverly Sunderman. Visitation will be held on Thursday, May 14, 2020 from 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm at the Myers Funeral Home Markle Chapel, 415 N. Lee Street, Markle, Indiana. We will be following the CDC regulations on social distancing and social gathering limits for the visitation and funeral service.
