Charles was born on August 21, 1929, in Marlin, Texas. He graduated from Marlin High School in 1947, then proudly served in the U.S. Navy.
Following his military service, Charles returned home to Marlin and began working at a local service station, which he later purchased. What began as a single station grew through years of hard work, determination, and vision into a successful business enterprise. Charles went on to acquire and operate numerous gas stations and convenience stores throughout Central Texas and became a respected fuel distributor. That distributorship later became Charles R. Evans Oil Company, Inc. He enjoyed a cherished relationship with Texaco throughout his career, which he greatly valued. He was also very proud of his involvement with the Texas Oil Marketers Association where he built lasting professional relationships and was respected for his leadership within the fuel industry.
Work was not merely a profession for Charles - it was part of who he was. He began working at the age of eight and continued until he was 93, when his health no longer allowed him to do what he loved. This tireless work ethic reflected the honesty and integrity that defined his life.
Charles was deeply devoted to Marlin and spent most of his life serving his hometown. He served on the Marlin ISD school board, the Chamber of Commerce, the board of directors of the First State Bank, and many other organizations. Charles was a strong supporter of local youth athletics and took great pride in encouraging young people. A man of strong Christian faith, he was a devoted member of the First Christian Church and was a leader and active force within the organization "Working for Christ," where he played a major role in supporting service efforts throughout Marlin. He was a loyal supporter of Baylor University and Baylor athletics, and loved cheering on the Bears' football and basketball teams.
Charles was a friend to everyone he met. He touched countless lives through his kindness and wisdom, and unwavering integrity. He was a man of his word, deeply faithful, and a steady presence in the lives of many.
In 1953, Charles married Theresa Jane Keelan, and together they built a life and family with their daughter, Mary Jane, and their son, Terry. They shared 49 wonderful years of marriage until Theresa's passing in 2002. Later, Charles married his longtime friend and Marlin classmate, June Houston Davison, and they shared 23 joyful years together.
