Joe Earl Schmid

Joe was born January 20, 1942, in Marlin, Texas, to Joe Schmid, Jr. and Doris Helen Hughes Schmid. He has two sisters: Sandra Black of Waco, Texas, and Phyllis Schmid of Waco, Texas. For most of his life he was a farmer in the Falls County area. Farming was his calling. He loved working with the soil, planting the seeds and watching them sprout and grow. He would go out daily checking their progress. He wouldn't have missed harvest for anything because this completed their life cycle. He also had a love for classic cars. He got a 1960 Ford Starliner for graduation from high school which he kept throughout his life.

Joe attended school in Otto, and then went to Mart Independent School District and graduated from there in 1960. He then went to Sam Houston in Huntsville, Texas, where he earned a BS and MS in agriculture. He also completed all his classwork toward a doctorate in agriculture at the University of Missouri in Columbia Missouri. Before returning to Otto to farm, he also taught in Killeen, Texas, and at Bee County College in Beeville, Texas.

He met and married his special love, Georgia Scroggins, while at Sam Houston. They were married December 22, 1961, in Reagan, Texas. They shared 60 years of marriage together, and were the parents of one special son, Jared Verlin Schmid.

Joe was preceded in death by his grandparents, his parents, Joe Jr. and Doris Schmid, brothers-in-laws: Bill Brunson, Kent Bachtel, and Joe Short.

He is survived by his wife, Georgia of Otto; son, Jared, sisters Sandra Black and husband, Ben Black, and Phyllis Schmid.

A celebration of his life will be held at Adams Funeral Home in Marlin, Texas on October 15th, 2022 with visitation at 1pm and service at 2pm. Rev. Bill Swearingen and Rev. Lynn Starnes will conduct the services. He will be laid to rest at Perry Methodist Cemetery in Perry, Texas.

Pall bearers will be Jared Schmid, Dewey Lowery, Chris Keathly, Brandon Black, Barry Black, and Terry Brunson. Honorary pall bears will be Mark, Brandon, Eric, and Ryan Moller, and Jason Dieterich.
