

Alcide Henry Bennett Jr., better known as "Red" or "Butch", 79, a resident of Bridge City, Louisiana passed away on Friday, December 3, 2021. Alcide was born June 10, 1942 to the late Alcide Sr. and Rita Fisher. He was married to Martha Earlene Bennett for 35 years before she passed away in 1998. Alcide leaves behind his companion of 22 years, Carolyn Zanco. Alcide was the devoted father of Deborah Lee Bennett Ory (Bryan Ory), Alcide Henry Bennett III, and William David Bennett Sr. (Angel Lee Bennett). Grandfather of Summer Dufrene (Jarred), Tuesday McSwain (Trevor), Atticus Ory, Bryson Ory, Nicholas Loyola, Brooke Bennett, Alcide Bennett IV, William Bennett Jr. (Katie), Christopher Bennett (Miranda), Amber Bennett, and Joshua Brumfield. Alcide also leaves behind 17 great grandchildren. He is survived by his only brother David “Hoss” Bennett (Rose Bennett) and his sister in law Bobbie Jean Coker (Joe Coker). Alcide is also survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends who will miss him dearly.
Alcide attended Alcée Fortier High School in New Orleans, and completed plumbing and industrial mechanical courses at Delgado Community College. Alcide became a well respected master plumber, and was a member of the UA Plumbers and Steamfitters Local 60 for fifty-nine years, where he served on the executive board. He was also a course instructor there. Alcide installed plumbing systems in many iconic New Orleans’ structures including the Jax Brewery, The Times Picayune, The Esplanade Mall, Domino Sugar, and the 1984 World’s Fair. He was employed with Industrial & Mechanical Contractors in New Orleans for thirty-seven years as plumber and project manager. Alcide served as a captain in the Bridge City Volunteer Fire Department. Alcide loved sports. At Bridge City Playground, he, along with Harold Held and his lifelong friend, Paul Loup, started baseball and football programs that were enjoyed by hundreds of families in the area. He also coached teams there. He was an avid billiards player, and his American Poolplayers Association team, “Family Tradition,” composed of family members, won many regional tournaments and played on the national level. Alcide was a father figure to many, and took on the role as “Paw Paw” happily later in life, always providing for everyone in his family generously and lovingly. Nothing was more important to Alcide than family.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00AM on Wednesday, December 15th, 2021 in the chapel of Westside Leitz-Eagan Funeral Home at 5101 Westbank Expressway in Marrero, Louisiana. A visitation will begin at 9:00AM and continue until the Mass time. Interment will follow at Carrollton Cemetery in New Orleans, Louisiana.
