A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, October 8, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at Westside Leitz-Eagan Funeral Home, 5101 Westbank Expy, Marrero for Dr. Alvin Frank Hindelang, who passed away Thursday, October 3, 2013 in Lafayette.
Visitation will be observed from 8:00 a.m. until the time of services. Father Frank Carabello will officiate.
Interment will follow in Westlawn Memorial Park in Gretna.
Dr. Alvin F. Hindelang passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 3, 2013. He was 88 years old. He lived all his life on the Westbank of New Orleans until his displacement to Lafayette after Hurricane Katrina. He was born August 5, 1925 in Algiers. He graduated from St. Aloysius in 1942. Prior to his enlistment in the Navy, at age 17, he attended L.S.U. where he was a cheerleader and intramural boxing champion. He was transferred to the Marines and assigned to the 54th Marine Replacement Battalion. He participated in the invasions of Guam and Okinawa. After returning home he attended Northern Illinois College of Optometry receiving a Doctorate of Optometry and was voted Outstanding Athlete of the college. He opened his practice in Algiers and practiced for 40 years. Dr. Hindelang was past Commander of American Region Post 218; Past President of Algiers Lions Club, Member of VFW Post 3121, Westbank Chairman of the American Red Cross, Past President of West Bank ARC, Member of the Knights of Columbus Council 1905, Member of the Krewe of Alla, and President of New Orleans Contact Lense Society for 15 years. He officiated High School Football for 25 years and was affectionately known as "Doc".
Dr. Hindelang is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Elsie Harris Hindelang; three daughters, Donna Marie H. Melancon and her husband Mark A., Judith Beth H. Higgins and her husband Harry all of Lafayette, and Dawnell Hindelang-Tortorich and her husband David of Germantown, TN; a son, David Harris Hindelang of Lafayette; a son-in-law, Michael Chatelain of Gretna; four grandchildren, Mark Adams Melancon, Jr., Elizabeth Higgins Scott and her husband Ned, Ashley Chatelain Rihner and her husband David, and Dr. Meagan Chatelain McClur and her husband Matthew; and four great-grandchildren, Peyton, William, Ian and Christian Rihner.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William Phillip Hindelang and Verna Hausknecht Hindelang; a daughter, Cheryl Adele H. Chatelain, and a brother, William P. Hindelang, Jr.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers a Mass.
