Daniel Gene Burris Sr.

Dan proudly served his country in the United States Navy. Following his military service, he began a career in the oilfield, a path that eventually brought him to Louisiana. He spent many years in the industry before retiring from Exterran.

A true jack of all trades, there wasn’t much Dan couldn’t do, or at least wouldn’t try. Among his many talents, he was also an official umpire. As fate would have it, it was behind the plate that he met his wife, Tracy, while umpiring the summer softball league in Buras. What started at the ballpark became a life they would build together.

Dan lived to hunt and fish. There weren’t many places he would rather be than outdoors, whether he was in a duck blind or out on the water. When he wasn’t hunting or fishing, chances are there was a game on TV and a cold Bud Light close by. He loved all things sports and enjoyed nothing more than kicking back to watch a game with family and friends.

He also never met a stranger. Dan could strike up a conversation with just about anyone and, as those who knew him best would tell you, he could talk to a wall. He always had a story to tell, and usually another one ready as soon as the first was finished. His stories, his sense of humor, and his ability to make a friend wherever he went were simply part of who he was.

More than anything, Dan will be remembered for the life he lived and the people he collected along the way. He worked hard, loved the outdoors, enjoyed the simple things in life, and never passed up the opportunity for a good conversation or a good story. His absence will leave a tremendous void, but there is no doubt his stories will continue to be told for years to come.

Dan is survived by his wife Tracy Burris; his son Daniel Burris Jr.; grandchildren Lydia Burris, Beija Burris, and Akari Burris; a brother Kenny Burris and a sister Paula Turlich (Donald); two nieces Heather Pierce and Trisha Hubbard; and his step-sons Davey Miles, Mike LeBeouf, and Patrick Patterson. He was preceded in death by his parents, Shan and Calvin Burris.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated in the Chapel of Westside Leitz-Eagan Funeral Home, 5101 Westbank Expressway, Marrero, on Monday, October 5, 2026 at 11:00 AM. Visitation will begin at 9:00 AM. Interment will follow in Westlawn South Cemetery.

In honor of Dan, crack open a Bud Light, watch a game, cast a line, and most importantly, tell a good story. He certainly would have.
