Deseree Davis Gaines passed away peacefully in her sleep on the evening of January 19, 2020 at the age of 85. She was born on May 30, 1934 in Georgetown, MS. A few years after her family transitioned from Mississippi to New Orleans, LA, she met and married the love of her life, Richard W. Gaines on May 21, 1961. As a devoted wife to Richard they shared 39 years of love, commitment and devotion.
Deseree and Richard resided in Avondale, LA and were both very active in the Kennedy Heights community. Deseree was a member of the Jefferson Parish Fireman’s Association and served on Sheriff Harry Lee’s Junior Deputies board.
Some of Deseree’s most enjoyable hobbies included cooking and working in her garden where you could find a variety of flowers, plants and trees. She prided herself on having a well-manicured lawn by cutting her grass “herself” almost every other day if possible.
She also enjoyed reading her bible very much. When she was unable to read her bible on her own, her caregivers would read it to her along with many other spiritually encouraging articles. She listened to music daily that expressed love, joy and hope from God’s word. These songs uplifted her spirit and brought a smile to her face as she “sang” along with the chorus.
Deseree is preceded in death by her father SW Davis Sr and mother Janie Beasley Davis; sisters Magalean Davis, Mamie Davis, Vera Dixon, Bettye Davis Williams and brother SW Davis Jr. She is survived by her brother John Wesley Davis and sisters Francis Davis Ralph and Janie Pearl Davis; loving in-laws, cousins, nieces, nephews and a host of long-time friends.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Memorial Service at Westside/Leitz-Eagan Funeral Home, 5101 Westbank Expy, Marrero, LA 70072, on Saturday, February 1, 2020 at 1:00PM. Visitation will begin at 11AM until service time.
