Edward "Sonny Boy" Joseph Vedros, Jr. passed away peacefully on June 17, 2023 at the age of 74. He was born in New Orleans, Louisiana on March 6, 1949 to Edward Vedros, Sr. and Beverly (Falgout) Vedros. Sonny was a lifelong resident of Westwego, Louisiana. He briefly attended Our Lady of Prompt Succor, but chose to complete his education in the School of Life. This is where he developed his Walter Mitty style of adventures and storytelling. You could never be certain of how elaborate Sonny's stories would become, but he was always committed to the story to the very end and was always prepared to overcome any objections thrown his way.
Sonny worked for Bon Marche and National Furniture Stores but his most favorite job was that of Volunteer FireFighter for the Westwego Fire Department. He lived and breathed everything that pertained to being a fireman. He constantly quoted rules and regulations to anyone that would listen and his fire stories were unlimited. But it must be said, his most famous story of the fire in Tanglewood was indeed true.
In his later years, he took great pride in assisting with the care of his mother (the ultimate boss/authority figure in his life) and he loved going fishing with his nephew-in-law Dwayne, where he always caught the first, biggest, and most fish.
Sonny was preceded in death by his parents, father Edward Vedros, Sr, mother Beverly Falgout Berger, and stepfather Charles Berger. He was also preceded in death by his sister Joan Vedros Malone and her husband Lonie along with his baby brother Thomas Vedros.
Left to cherish his memory and many stories are his nieces Kellie Vedros Sepcich (Dwayne), Rochelle Vedros LeBlanc (David), Denise Malone, and Crystal Malone Hartman (Chad). Sonny also leaves behind numerous great nieces and nephews. In addition to his family, he also leaves behind many friends gained through his fire department family. There are too many to thank personally, but the family would like to especially thank Lonie and Kim Taylor for their friendship and assistance these past few years.
Family and friends are invited to attend the visitation on Saturday, July 15, 2023 from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at Westside Leitz-Egan Funeral Home, 5101 Westbank Expressway followed by Funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Our Lady of Prompt Succor Cemetery in Westwego. Brief reception to follow at the Westwego Volunteer Fire Department Meeting Room.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.WestsideLeitzEagan.com for the Vedros family.
