

He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Diana Smith Petit, his daughters, Allison Sanderson (David) and Shannon McIntee (Kelly), his grandchildren, Roxanne Dillenkoffer (Bryan), Dave Sanderson (Ashley) and Michele Sanderson (Scott), his great grandchildren, William and Andrew Joseph "AJ" Dillenkoffer, Kolton, Chase, Haleigh and Scotty Sanderson, his beloved sister, Ursula Petit, his brother-in-laws, Charles Smith (Frances) and Michael Smith and a host of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his son, Merlin Joseph Petit, Jr. "Joey", his parents, Octave and Elbe Petit, his brothers, Allen (Gladys), Hilton (Rose), Lynn (Gloria), his sisters, Esther Murphy (Arnold), Minerva Champagne (James), Irma Gagneaux (Rudy) and his sister-in-law, Linda Smith.
He was a graduate of West Jefferson High School, class of 1956. Following high school he was employed at Avondale Shipyards in the Sheet Metal Department for over 45 years. After retirement he loved repairing lawn mowers, flying remote control airplanes with the flying club, playing cards with his family every weekend and anything baseball. Merlin is an avid LSU Baseball fan. To honor him, we ask that you wear your favorite LSU attire at his services. (Yeah You Right!)
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Service of Remembrance in the Chapel of Westside Leitz-Eagan Funeral Home, 5101 Westbank Expressway, Marrero, Louisiana on Thursday, March 9, 2023 at 11:00 AM. Visitation will begin on Wednesday Evening from 6:00 PM until 9:00 PM, and continue on Thursday morning from 9:00 AM until the service.
