In Loving Memory of Sam Cangelosi, Sr., who passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on September 11, 2026, at the age of 84. He was born on October 18, 1941 in the city of New Orleans, Louisiana.
He leaves behind a loving family who will forever hold him in their hearts. Together for 66 years, he was the devoted and loving husband of Elaine Schiro Cangelosi. Loving father of Penny Cangelosi and his forever Son In Law, Maxie Tybussek, Jr., Roland Cangelosi, and the late Salvador "Sam" Cangelosi, Jr. He was the beloved son of the late Dominick and Bessie Cangelosi. Survived by his loving sisters, Angie Baldwin, Gloria O'Brien, Rosemary Adams, and Joann Ditchero. Sam was preceded in death by his cherished brothers, Roland, Pete, Johnny, and Carlo "Cokey" Cangelosi. He treasured his grandchildren, Jennifer Tybussek (Peter), Maximillion Tybussek III (Theresa), Sophia Cangelosi Beck, Payne Cangelosi, and Jesse Darcourt (Ashley), and his great grandchildren, Skylar Tybussek, Hayden Tybussek, Kambrie Snow Beck, Aidan Darcourt, and Alaina Darcourt. Sam is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and cousins who will carry forward his legacy of love and kindness.
A compassionate and generous spirit, Sam spent over 50 years of his life working hard to provide for his family. He was a dedicated volunteer with the Lafayette Street Fire Department in Gretna, on the Westbank for many years. His commitment to serving his community was matched only by his deep, abiding faith and patriotism.
Sam found immense joy in the simple pleasures of life. He loved nothing more than sitting on his porch, greeting neighbors and passerby's with warmth and kindness. Every conversation was an opportunity for him to share his wisdom and humor. He also found relaxation at the casinos, a place where he could unwind and enjoy himself. He also loved watching sports.
Sam will be deeply missed by his family, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. He led a rich life with love and dedication.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Wynhoven Community Care Center and Notre Dame Hospice for their compassionate care during Sam's final days. Your kindness was greatly appreciated.
