Thomas Morgan Guthrie "Tommy" was born and raised in New Orleans with his 5 siblings. Being from the Irish Channel he attended St. Alphonsus where his faith took root and served as an altar boy. He graduated from Redemptorist High School with the c/o 75’ where he enjoyed sharing many of his great memories, including playing baseball, being MVP of his basketball team, singing in the chorus and where he met the love of his life Janet and their love story began. They shared 50 beautiful years of marriage, building a loving family that became the center of his world.
He was a lifelong fan of the Yankees, LSU Tigers, Saints, and John Curtis Patriots, where his children attended school. His love for sports led him to coach at PARD, where he shared his passion for the game and where he taught young athletes an important lesson: “Keep your composure and never give up.” He lived by those words, building lasting friendships and helping shape players into champions both on and off the field. He took pride in watching his players grow, celebrating their successes, and seeing some go on to become professional athletes. Eighteen years later, "Coach Tommy" returned to the field to coach Emily’s softball teams. Whether coaching on the field or playing in the backyard with family, he found joy in sharing his love of the game with others.
Tommy loved dancing, celebrations, and a house full of family. He was always the life of the party, bringing humor, heart, and meatballs to every gathering. His dance moves even landed him on The John Pela Show in the 70s, and his wonderful singing voice made him a natural entertainer. Whether singing Elvis’s “Can’t Help Falling in Love” and “Just a Gigolo” at Sid’s or “Drops of Jupiter” and “In Case You Didn’t Know” at home he found happiness in bringing people together through music, laughter, and a good time. He had a personality that filled a room, and his presence made even the simplest gathering memorable.
Beyond all his many talents, Tommy’s greatest joy was being a husband, Dad, and Paw-Paw. Nothing mattered more to him than his family. He cherished every moment with them, from bedtime stories and weekend outings to family gatherings around the table. His potato salad was hands down the best, and his turkey and sausage gumbo after Thanksgiving was a family favorite. He worked hard, loved deeply, spoke honestly, and was always generous with his time, heart, and humor.
The love he gave, and the laughter and memories he created will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him. He will never be forgotten.
Tommy passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, on October 21, 2026, at the age of 71. He was born on August 22, 1955 in New Orleans, Louisiana to the late Joseph and Christabel Guthrie.
