On November 6, 1954, almost 3 months earlier than expected, he was born in Meridian, MS. He was so tiny his parents brought him home in a shoe box. He always had a knack for making a great entrance and grabbing the attention of everyone. He would often reminisce about bowling with his mother, spending the summers in Mississippi with his "second mother," Tillie Mattox, and getting into mischief with his brother and sisters growing up. Billy spent most of his life in Harvey, LA where he started his own family and proudly purchased his first home. He cherished the years he coached baseball, softball and lead other activities to foster growth and instill good morals in his children, as well as, many others. Billy always had time to have a cup of coffee, smoke a cigarette, go fishing or listen to anyone who needed to talk. His unforgettable personality left a lasting impression on every person he met. His passion for the Alabama Crimson Tide was unwavering. He loved fixing things with his hands, driving on the open road, and most importantly helping others. He was overly generous with his time and possessions, especially to those he loved most.
William Pogue's legacy will be carried on by his two children, Byron James Pogue and Ashley Pogue Maturin, along with their spouses Tram and Ryan; two grandchildren Leo Jason Maturin and Piper Lien Pogue; his three sisters, Elizabeth "Betsy" Bauman, Nila Merle "Myl" Burmaster, and Anne "Patti" Pogue, as well as, many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Kathryn Matheney Pogue and Byron Gideon Pogue, his brother Daniel "Danny" Pogue, Grandmother and Pappy, his father-in-law, Murray "Jimmy" Valois, and his mother-in-law, MayeBelle Moore Valois.
There will never be another friend and father like him. ROLL TIDE!
