Donald Herbert Herron Entered into rest on Thursday October 1, 2026, Donald Herbert “Duck” Herron, 81, of Martinez, Ga. He was born in Augusta, Ga. on April 25, 1945 at University Hospital to Alvin Lee Herron and Dorothy Evelyn Wylds Herron. They lived at 1942 Starnes Street. He graduated from Richmond Academy. He started his work life as a hamburger cook at Kellys Hamburgers on Walton Way. He then followed his father and grandfather into the automotive industry. He worked in the parts department at Harrison Gulley Chevrolet where his father, brothers and uncles were employed as a mechanics. He then moved over to the body shop. He left there and went to work for Havertys Furniture Company. At the urging of his friend Lester Schlein he took a job as an insurance adjuster with Allstate Insurance Company. He would work there for over 30 years before retiring in 2001. He also worked for many years on the weekends at Mervs Auto Parts. After retiring from Allstate he got what he called his dream job. He was a cart boy at Bartram Trail Golf Course. He worked there for a few years before going back to work as an insurance adjuster. Duck said he just enjoyed that work so much that he missed it and wanted to keep doing it. He did it up until the day of his passing. He also worked for 25 years every Masters week on the scoreboards. It was a job he loved as much as working as an insurance adjuster.
One of his passions was the game of golf. He loved the game and he loved spending time on the course with all of his golfing buddies. He was a member of Green Meadows before becoming a long time member at Bartram Trail Golf Course. He was highly respected by his golfing community. The family thought it was fitting that he spent his last few moments on the golf course. They wouldn't have wanted it any other way. He passed with his golf shoes on standing on the green.
The only thing he loved more than golf was spending time with his Grandson Tanner. He cherished the time they spent together. He never missed one of his baseball games. And he always looked forward to sitting with Tanner and watching Braves Baseball or Nascar. Pops always had an answer to a baseball or Nascar question.
Besides his parents, Duck was preceded in life by his brothers: Charles Alvin “Buddy” Herron, Richard Lee “Dickie” Herron, William Perry “Billy” Herron and a sister who died at birth.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years Carol Cadden Herron. His children, Scott Herron and Michele (Braian) Coke; A grandson Tanner Coke; a sister Dorothy (Fred) Jennings; sister in law Linda Herron and sister in law Mary Ann (Billy) Pearson as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be held Wednesday October 7, 2026 at Elliotts Funeral Home at 4255 Columbia Road in Martinez. Visitation will be at 10:00 AM. The funeral will follow at 11:00 AM. Burial will be at Bellevue Cemetery in Grovetown.
The family requests that attendees please wear golf shirts and golf pants for the services. Duck was most comfortable in his golf shirt and shorts. So the family thought it would be fitting tribute to the man called Duck for everyone to dress in golf attire or whatever you are most comfortable wearing.
Pallbearers will be some of Ducks Golfing buddies: Reynold Borseth, Patrick Mulvehill. Charles Doolittle, Jim Brendel, Rex Goble and Terry Davis.
Flowers are welcome. If you prefer to make a monetary donation please make one In Memory of Donald Herbert “Duck” Herron to The American Heart Association or The National Breast Cancer Foundation.
