Mac was born in Louisville, KY, to Ed and Frances Pitt Smith on April 14, 1942. His formative years were spent in Louisville where he and his sister were often in the care of his beloved grandparents W.E. and Marguerite “Pitty” Pitt. It is also where he secured his first and favorite job at the age of 14 as a paperboy, delivering 130 newspapers each morning and 110 each afternoon. He loved telling detailed stories of this venture and other antics that paved his life.
Upon graduation from Vanderbilt University in 1960, Mac began a career in banking in Memphis, TN. He took a hiatus from banking from 1966 until 1969 for a stint as a paratrooper in the Army. While stationed at Fort Gordon, GA, he met and married a local nurse, Virginia “Ann” Derrick. They had two children and were married for 57 years until Ann’s passing in 2025.
In 1971 Mac earned his MBA from the University of Southern California then continued his banking career in South Carolina, Tennessee, and Georgia. After retiring from banking in 2009, Mac scheduled drivers and drove vehicles for local car dealerships. This job kept him constantly on the phone and on the go at a moment’s notice, which he loved!
As a proud Dad to Mary Alice and Eddie, Mac instilled in them the importance of learning (especially history!), family connection, and faith. He was always eager to include them in his various hobbies over the years such as gardening, ceramics, stamp collecting, coin club, genealogy, raising tropical fish, and auctions.
Mac loved playing the clarinet in both the church and local orchestras, which he did until his heart attack in 2011. He also taught Sunday School for many years and was a longtime member of First Baptist Church of Augusta, GA.
Mac never shied from engaging with strangers, speaking his mind, or a spontaneous adventure. He leaves his family and friends with many stories to tell and will be dearly missed. He is survived by his daughter, Mary Alice (Todd) Clark; son, Eddie Smith; sister, Peggy (Joe) Patterson; sisters-in-law Betty (Griffin) Cupstid and Jean Derrick; grandchildren, Morgan Clark, Kathryn (Joseph) Lesser, Mason Clark, Kennedy (Charlie) Caldwell, Katelyn Smith, Anna Claire Smith; great grandchildren, Reece Lesser and Micah Lesser; former daughter-in-law, Keri Cuthbertson; and many nieces and nephews.
There will be a casual graveside service at Westover Memorial Park at 2601 Wheeler Rd, Augusta, GA at 10am followed by fellowship at the First Baptist Church of Augusta at 3500 Walton Way Ext Augusta, GA in the Fellowship Hall Atrium 11am-12:30pm on Saturday, June 27, 2026.
