Norma Jean Smith

Norma Jean Smith, 80, passed away Friday, January 25, 2019, in the comfort of her home in Martinez, Georgia. Norma was born August 15, 1938, in Covington, Virginia, to the late Howard Taft Smith and Mary Frances Bennett Smith. She was a graduate of the 1957 class of Covington High School and married her high school sweetheart 61 years ago at Christ United Methodist Church in Covington. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Katie Lee Smith Jones and husband, Howard, of Hopewell, Virginia; and by her father-in-law, Aubrey Wesley Smith, and mother-in-law, Ethel Grace Rickett Smith, of Mallow, Virginia. She is survived by her husband, George Daniel Smith, of Martinez; a sister, Frances “Frankie” Lou Smith Reid and husband David, of Lynchburg, Virginia; a sister-in-law, Georgia Ann Smith Pinske, of Gaylord, Minnesota; a sister-in-law, Alice Carol Smith Tucker and husband, Gordon, of Mallow; two daughters, Susan Y. Smith, of Evans, Georgia, and Jennifer C. Smith, of Martinez; and two sons, Kenneth W. Smith and wife Debra, of Grovetown, Georgia, and Daniel L. Smith and two sons, Trenton and Kyler, of Evans; three grandchildren, Danielle J. Walle and husband Brise, and their three children, Aubrey, Lydia and Finn, of Charlotte, North Carolina; and David L. Holmes III and wife Mollie, and their two sons, Colten and George, of Grovetown; Monique E. Brudi of North Augusta, South Carolina; as well as many beloved cousins, nieces and nephews. Norma Jean never met a stranger. She was a Civil Service worker at the Fort Gordon, Georgia, Commissary. Norma was also a member of West Acres Baptist Church in Evans, where she very much enjoyed her Sunday School class. She loved family gatherings and Christmas and carefully applied and essential lipstick; she was just the best wife and mom ever. Her annual rum cakes were highly anticipated by many lucky recipients. A gathering in her memory will be held Friday evening, February 1, 2019, from 6:00pm-8:00pm at Elliott Sons Funeral Home, 4255 Columbia Road in Martinez. Interment is planned to take place at Alleghany Memorial Park in Low Moor, Virginia.
