Peggy A. Kelly

Augusta, GA- Peggy Agnew Kelly died Sunday, January 20, 2013 at University Hospital. She was born to Homer G. Agnew and Johnnie Lee Rowlett Agnew on March 23, 1923, in Atlanta, GA. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Ruth Agnew. She is survived by her daughters, Rebecca Kelly(Dick James) of Atlanta, GA and Elizabeth Claypool(Charles) of Augusta, GA; four grandchildren, Chris Claypool(Renn) of Columbia, SC; Justin Claypool (Lisa) of Cincinnati, OH; Kelly James of Atlanta, GA; and Kevin James of Duluth, MN; and one great grandchild, Noah Claypool of Columbia, SC.

Peggy lived in Augusta for the last 63 years. She attended Augusta College(now GRU) and received a BA in Elementary Education in 1969 and Med in reading in 1976. She taught in the Richmond County School system until retiring in 1980. She spent her “retirement” doing what she loved best—learning Italian and increasing her knowledge in a multitude of interests, especially in the arts. She was a loyal and frequent attendee at a variety of events and always supported development of the arts in Augusta. Her heart was full of love for her pets and all animals. She also enjoyed hobbies such as gardening, reading, cooking, and traveling.

In 1954, Peggy, along with eleven other people with similar beliefs, gathered together to form the Unitarian Fellowship of Augusta, later to become the Unitarian Universalist Church of Augusta. This group of individuals came to be the foundation for her social, religious, and community life. She was very active in her church serving in many capacities until her declining health prevented her from attending.

A memorial service will be held at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Augusta, 3501 Walton Way, Augusta, GA 30909 on Saturday, January 26, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. with the Rev. Dacia Reid offiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Unitarian Universalist Church of Augusta or the Augusta Humane Society.
