

Walter Douglas Gifford, age 93, passed away Friday, August 28, 2026.
Walter is preceded in death by his wife; Emily Appeld Gifford.
Walter leaves behind his children; W. Douglas Gifford (Jeanette), Barbara Smith (Willard), Jane Johnston (Thomas) and Daniel Gifford (Heidi); 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Walter was a US Navy veteran, who served on the USS Shangri-La. He enjoyed a long career working in sales for various railroads. He was a collector at heart of many things. He took pleasure in collecting stamps, coins and model trains. In his retirement, he was a member of the Tri-State Model Railroaders, who met in the old train depot in Mineral Bluff, GA. He also helped with the preservation of the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway, in Blue Ridge, GA.
He enjoyed spending time with his family. A yearly highlight was always the family summer vacation to a cottage at the beach on Cape Cod. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was loved dearly and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Visitation will be held at 10:00 AM, followed by a memorial service at 11:00 AM, on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, 3703 River Watch Pkwy., Martinez, GA 30907. A graveside service will be held Wednesday, September 9, 2026, at 11:00 AM at Georgia National Cemetery-Canton at 1080 Scott Hudgens Drive, Canton, GA 30114.
