Born on December 2, 1946, she was the daughter of the late Walter and Lorice Yates.
She graduated from Eastern High School in Washington DC.
Alva retired from the Federal Bureau of Protective Service.
She is survived by her sons: Bryan Barnes (Jessica), and Eugene Barnes; brothers: Gregory and Walter Yates; grandchildren: Brandon Barnes, Alden Barnes, Mia Barnes, Cheaslie Barnes, Brenton Gillespie, Christian Barnes, Torrey Barnes, Amber Hawks (Preston), and Charity Gillespie; and caretakers: Natasha Williams and Beth Ann Brown.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene Barnes; and her sister, Brenda Yates.
Friends will be received on Saturday from 1pm until the time of the funeral service at 2pm at Rosedale Funeral Home.
