

Erdem was born in Izmir, Turkey in 1928 and immigrated to the United States of America to attend University. In 1954, he earned a PhD in Mechanical Engineering/Physics from California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, California and subsequently worked as an accomplished professional in the field of aerospace and aeronautics.
Dr. Erdem Ergin was a well-loved member of the Shepherdstown, WV community where he worked as a faculty member at Shepherd University serving as a Professor of Statistics/Mathematics.
He was predeceased by his late wife, Carole Ergin. In her memory he established the Carole Ergin Scholarship Fund which is designated for WV social work majors who demonstrate volunteerism and community activism. He embraced her passion to prevent domestic violence and together they founded the Community Alternatives to Violence, a non-profit which encompassed a focus on educating abusers to alternatives to violence.
Dr. Erdem also shared a passion for Music and Theater Arts. He was delighted to support Shepherd University’s School of Music by gifting one of their three planned Steinway pianos for the music program in honor of his current wife, Mrs. Joan Ergin.
Erdem was an incredibly gentle and generous man. He leaves behind beloved family members in Turkey, Sweden and America and many friends. Dr. Erdem I. Ergin will lovingly remain in our hearts and will be greatly missed.
Dr. Ergin attended The Bridge Community Church in Ranson, WV. The funeral will be a private ceremony with only close family members present.
