

James Stewart Scott Jr., lovingly known as “Scotty,” passed away peacefully on September 28, 2025, at the age of 82. Born on December 12, 1942, in Martinsburg, West Virginia, Scotty was the son of the late James Stewart Scott Sr.
A devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, Scotty is survived by his beloved wife of over 60 years, Jean Kable Scott, their son James Stewart Scott III ("Jimmy"), and daughter Julia Kable Scott Chen and her fiancé Timmy Staubs. He leaves behind four cherished granddaughters: Lauryn and Tara Scott, and Leah and Madison Chen. He is also survived by his sisters Sandy Scott Fuss and Peggy, and brothers Ted and Danny Scott.
Scotty was preceded in death by his sisters Beverly and Gloria, his brother Michael, and his beloved Aunt Vallie and Uncle Watson, who played a significant role in raising him.
A proud graduate of Musselman High School, Scotty went on to serve in the U.S. Navy before earning his degree from Shepherd College. He began his career as a physical education teacher in Berkeley County, WV, and later found his calling at the Maryland Correctional Institute, where he retired as the recreational director and later teaching reading to the inmates after many years of dedicated service.
Scotty was a man of deep passions and generous spirit. He loved spending time with his granddaughters, sharing laughter and stories with his many friends, watching football and NASCAR, and enjoying the outdoors through hunting and fishing.
His commitment to his community was unwavering. He volunteered with numerous organizations over the years, including:Hospice (25+ years of service) Meals on Wheels, The Shepherd University Alumni Association, Shepherd Gridiron Club, Conococheague Hunting Club, Webelos Scout Leader, Jaycees, Martinsburg Run for Fun Club. He was also a proud member of the VFW and American Legion.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Rosedale Funeral Home on October 11, 2025 at 11 am with burial to follow in Rosedale Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made in Scotty’s honor to Hospice of the Panhandle, Shepherd University Foundation, or a local Meals on Wheels organization.
