

Born on September 15th, 1932 in Essex, MD, he was the son of the late Ethel and Frederick Matthews. He was raised in the Catholic Church.
Jerry was a graduate of Kenwood High School. He was a Veteran of the US Naval Construction Battalion or Naval Seabees, having served 21 years. Retiring as Petty Officer 1st Class - E6. He married the love of his life, Lorraine in 1955, and they were married 64 years until her passing in 2019. They lived in Essex, Maryland where they raised 4 children, Jerry, Jr., Timothy, Darlene and Michelle. They moved to Waynesboro, PA., in 1975, and then continued their journey together to The Villages, Florida in 1995, where they lived for 24 years until Lorraine passed away. Jerry then moved back north in 2020 to Martinsburg, WV to be closer to family and friends.
He helped start up the Children’s Village of Hagerstown, Md., He was a lifetime member of the Optimist Club of Hagerstown. Then he retired from the C&P Telephone Company after 31 years.
Jerry was an avid golfer, He loved his time around his family and friends. He loved building and working with his hands. If you needed anything fixed Jerry was there with a helping hand. He was so loving and was always willing to help others no matter what. He had a big heart and his kindness shined brightly and everyone that knew him loved him.
He was a member of Baker Heights Baptist church where he was reborn and baptized into Christianity at the age of 90. He loved his Pastors and congregation. He was a devout Christian man who loved the Lord and had an influence on many lives and family members.
Jerry is survived by his children: Jerome Jr. and wife Robin of Colora, MD, Darlene of Martinsburg, WV, Michelle Ridenour and husband Matt of Summit Point, WV; grandchildren: Jerome III, Tya, Adam, Zach, and Josh; step-grandson: Robert; great-grandchild; Gunnar Emory.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Lorraine; brother, Lawrence; sister, Gloria; son, Timothy and first great-grandson, Timothy James.
