Life’s journey for Joey B. Holland Sr. began on April 4, 1963 and ended on May 29, 2019. He was born the 8th of eight children to William Kent Holland and Laura Lee (Blocker) Holland. Joey grew up in Washington DC. He graduated from Strom Thurman High School in Edgefield County, South Carolina. Joey enlisted in the US Army in April of 1982 and suffered injuries in the line of duty. His injuries had a life-long impact which he ultimately overcame through faith in Jesus Christ. At the time of his home going, Joey was serving as a beloved and respected cook at the VA Medical Center in Martinsburg for over 14 years. Joey was a member in good standing at New Beginnings Apostolic Church. He was a beloved, active member of Spiritual Warrior Outreach Ministry. Joey was a man who loved his family and often greeted people with photos of his grandchildren. Above all, Joey’s first concern was for his family. He was also a faithful and kind-hearted friend. He was a hard worker. Joey did his best to be a good man, a better man, and finally the best man he could possibly be. In addition to his parents, Joey is predeceased by his sister, Teresa Holland-Still; and his brother, Carl J. ”Nookie” Blocker. Joey is survived by Juliet Abrams, his life partner of over 28 years; their sons: Joey Brooke Holland II and Jamal Julius Abrams; and by his beloved grandchildren: Juanita Watkins and Jamal Amari Abrams. I worked with Joey at the VA. He was a very good cook, he cared about his work and about the Veterans he helped to nourish and heal. I remember when Joey started working in Nutrition and Food Service at the VA as an entry level food service worker. Because of his good attitude and quality work, he was promoted to a cook position which is not easy to do. Joey liked updating me on his accomplishments and was a warm and loveable man. We miss him here already.
