I first met John Shaffer on December 24, 1969 at Kings daughters hospital in martinsburg West Virginia, on this day my father (John Shaffer) held me in his arms for the very first time. And even though I don’t remember that very first day, the love he shower me with on that day has continued throughout my life. There’s no way I can give you my fondest memory of my father because my best memories encompass my entire life.  I do feel my fathers best features were his love of God, love for his family, and the love of his country. I will always think of my father as the great teacher, my father was very gifted with this  ability. He was a very patient man who believed that mistakes were simply learning opportunities. He never got upset when mistakes were made instead he used it to educate. His life on this earth has now ended but I am certain I will still learn and grow because of my father.  I love you Dad ❤️ 

I met Mr. Shaffer when I was in Scout Troop 16 in Marlowe, WV, about 1970 or so. He was an Assistant Scoutmaster then. Mr. Shaffer's son Roy was in Scouts with me at that time also. We had a great time.  Mr.  Shaffer was a kind and gentle man. He taught us how to do residential electrical wiring, and we spent many days in 1973 doing just that in Bowman Lodge at Camp Rock Enon in Gore, VA. One year, he took a bunch of us Scouts to the Pennsylvania Farm Show in his Ford Torino, I believe it was. When I came back to the area and got back into Scouting as an adult, Mr. Shaffer was still involved. He helped Troop 16 do all sorts of activities.  I am forever indebted to him for the things he taught me and the example he set. 

I’m really sorry for your loss and I’ll keep you in my prayers. When I think of your dad, I think of him with a smile on his face, a twinkle in his eye and a lot of gumption for a man that traveled like he used to. It seems as though he enjoyed his life and nothing -  not even age would stop him.  I always enjoyed talking to him. He was a very personable, likeable man and I enjoyed exchanging Christmas cards with him.
