Born on October 25, 1936, Maxine grew up in Hagerstown as the beloved daughter of Walter Sweeney and Admer Childress Sweeney. She was one of a large, loving family and is preceded in death by her parents; her sisters Louise Remsburg, Dorothy Sweeney, Emma Sweeney, and Judith Sweeney; her brothers Arthur E. Sweeney and Jack Sweeney; and her niece Beverly and nephew Stanley.
Maxine is survived by her devoted husband of 54 years, Carl C. Jones Jr., her daughters Carla Jones and Darlene Stuller, and her cherished grandsons Andrew Jones and Derek and David Stuller. She leaves behind her great-grandchildren Devin, Cameron, Seth, and Megan; nieces Donna, Diane, and Teresa; nephews Ed and Alan; and several great-nieces and great-nephews who loved her dearly.
Maxine was an amazing, giving, kind-hearted woman who spent her life helping others. A woman of deep faith, she was a longtime member of Saint Joseph’s Catholic Church and an active member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas until dementia limited her involvement. Her generosity extended to church events—especially bingo nights, where she enjoyed helping, playing, and making her beloved potato candy. She also loved helping make and bake their famous apple pies. The first job she retired from was ACME Markets in the meat department.
She had a joyful spirit and loved to stay busy. Maxine enjoyed playing golf, attending festivals, and especially camping with friends at the Forest Festival in Elkins, WV. She later retired from Berkeley County Schools, where she worked as a cook and was known for her warm presence and hardworking nature.
Family was everything to Maxine. She loved baking and carrying on her mother’s traditions of homemade Christmas cookies and her own recipe of hard tack candy. She was one of the proudest fans at her grandson Andrew’s baseball and basketball games. She treasured family reunions, work picnics, gatherings of any kind—any excuse to bring people together filled her with joy.
Maxine’s kindness, warmth, and generosity touched everyone who knew her. Her legacy lives on in the family she adored, the friends she cherished, and the countless lives she brightened with her gentle heart.
