Mike was born in Lexington, Kentucky on July 7, 1949.
Mike attended Lafayette High School, where he studied welding and enjoyed time with his best friend, Freddie Ball. He served four years as a Seabee in the US Navy, with one tour in Vietnam. Following his Naval service, Mike continued to serve his country at the Department of Justice as a Special Investigative Agent in the Bureau of Prisons and retired from federal service in 1998, allowing him to enjoy many years of retirement.
Mike’s family, friends, time in the Navy and working in prisons allowed him to have a story for any occasion. Mike didn’t like to be the center of attention, but his storytelling and sneaky sense of humor would often have the entire room waiting for the next detail or punchline.
Mike was a devoted husband and proud father, grandfather, and dog dad. His hobbies and interests helped define who he was. Mike enjoyed reading, birdwatching, building models, and most of all dogs. He was an amateur historian, excellent writer, lifelong learner, and curious about this world and others. He was completely dedicated to his flip phone and printed directions until just a year ago and delighted in his middle name being “No Middle Name.”
He is survived by his beloved wife, Geneva (Lewis), Brother, Dick and wife Fredrica, Son, Kelly Larkin and wife Kim (Collins), Stepson, Brian Parker, and wife Heather (Driscoll), Grandchildren, Joey, Hunter, Grady, and Evan, dog Ronan and many others who loved him deeply. Mike was predeceased by his parents, Robert Larkin and Hester (Florence), brother Pat Larkin, and daughter, Holly Larkin.
Family and friends will be received at Rosedale Funeral Home on Monday, February 2, 2026 from 11am until the time of the funeral service at 12pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the US Navy Seabee foundation.
We find comfort knowing that Mike’s legacy and memories will live on through the stories he told us and the lessons he taught us. These memories will stay with us forever.
