Roger was born on June 8, 1949, in Ronceverte, West Virginia, and was the son of the late Karim and Helen Hamood. Throughout his life, Roger carried himself with steady devotion—to his faith, his family, and the many people who came to rely on his counsel and example.
A man known for diligent work and wisdom, Roger built a lasting legacy through his service and leadership. He was a Deacon and Sunday School Teacher at Tomahawk Christian Church, where his commitment to others was evident in the time and care he gave. He also made significant contributions at Shepherd University, where he served in the accounting department from 1978 to 2019, as a instructor, professor, and Department Chair of the Shepherd University Accounting Department. Over the course of his career, Roger taught more than 6,500 students and co-founded the West Virginia Council of Accounting Educators. He also helped grow the program to assist students in passing the WV CPA Program—leaving an imprint on generations of local accountants and CPAs who learned under his guidance. Roger was also named 2002 Educator of the year by the WV Certified Public Accountants. Following his retirement, alumni, friends, colleagues, and students established the Roger Hamood Accounting Student Endowment Fund in his honor, recognizing his 41 years of service to the Accounting Department at Shepherd University. Funds are designated for the benefits of accounting students.
Roger found joy in the simple and meaningful pleasures of life. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, billiards, and bowling, and he especially loved watching his grandchildren’s sporting events and was always proud. Roger was deeply loved by those who knew him.
Roger is survived by his beloved wife, Cheryl Hamood; his daughter, Amanda Runkles (Brad); and his grandchildren, Colt Runkles, Cru Runkles, and Cash Runkles. He is also survived by his sister, Patti McCrory, as well as nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Roger was preceded in death by his son, Roger Hamood Jr.; his brother, Bob Hamood; and his sister, Sylvia Collins.
A Celebration of Life will be held for Roger at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Roger Hamood Accounting Scholarship Endowment at Shepherd University. Donations for the endowment can be mailed to Shepherd University, PO Box 5000 Shepherdstown, West Virginia 25443. In the memo line please list Roger Hamood Endowment Fund.
