Ann Scanlin went home to her Heavenly Father on February 20 where she was joyfully reunited with her husband Jack, her son John, her father James Gatens, mother Rose Marie Cunnie, and her sisters Marie Bones and Rosemary Baisch. She is survived by her daughter Joanne Sullivan, son-in-law Jim Sullivan, daughter-in-law April Scanlin, and five grandchildren: Erin, Allison and John E. Scanlin, and Ryan and Gillian Sullivan. Additional survivors include her beloved brothers-in-law and several nieces and nephews. Heartfelt thanks go to Ann’s special friends at Olympic Alzheimer’s Residence in Gig Harbor for their loving care of “Granny Annie.” Born in Philadelphia in 1929, Ann was an alumna of West Philadelphia Catholic Girls High School. She and Jack married in 1951 and settled in Southern California where Ann spent 30 years as an executive secretary (part of the last generation of short hand practitioners) at the Purex Corporation. Ann and Jack moved to Washington in 2004 after their son and daughter both settled there. An active parishioner of St. James Catholic Church in Redondo Beach, CA, Ann volunteered to provide meals and clothing for the homeless. An animal lover, she had three basset hounds and three desert tortoises as pets over the years, and she adored them. Funeral Services for this proud Irish woman will be held, appropriately, on March 17 at the Chapel in Echo Bay at 1:00 PM, followed by burial at the Fox Island Cemetery and a reception. In lieu of flowers, donations to the John Scanlin ’71 Memorial Scholarship at Bishop Montgomery High School in Torrance, CA (www.bmhs-la-org) or the Alzheimer’s Association (www.alz.org) will be gratefully appreciated. Gratitude to the Schaefer-Shipman Funeral Home.
