David Ronning passed from this earth on Saturday, April 9, 2022. His battle with Alzheimer’s is finished; the race was hard, but we’re certain he heard the words “Well done!” as he crossed the finish line.
Dave was born in 1938 in Almora, Minnesota. The third of nine children, he attended a one room schoolhouse until he reached high school. Leaving extended family and friends, the Ronnings moved to Marysville WA, and it was there he met the cute girl down the road, Joan Bruns. Dave graduated from Marysville High School in 1956, and was employed at various jobs, including Boeing and working as a mechanic / attendant at Whitey’s Shell Station in downtown Marysville. After Joan graduated from high school, David and Joan got married on July 9, 1960 and set out on their great life journey, including raising their two children, Michael and Michelle.
David joined the Marysville Fire Department in 1964 as their first full-time paid firefighter, eventually serving as Fire Marshall. He acquired a constant work companion, “Marysville’s Miss Pumper” who was the sweetest and best known dalmatian in town, a real-life firehouse dog. In 1973, David accepted the position of Battalion Chief with Snohomish County Fire Prevention District #12, where he then was promoted to Assistant Chief, then served the community as Fire Chief of District #12 for 16 years, retiring in 1991.
David is survived by his wife of “almost” 62 years, Joan. He also leaves his two children, Pastor Michael Edwards-Ronning of Willingboro NJ, and daughter and son-in-law Michelle and Howard Aandahl of Everett WA. Dave’s five wonderful grandchildren are Lydia Aandahl and Marit, Rebecca, Isaiah, and Sarah Edwards-Ronning. He also leaves his siblings Douglas (Diane) Ronning, Annette Heinz, Bruce (Susan) Ronning, Debbie Ralston, and Wendy (Bob) McClure, as well as several brothers-and-sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Albin and Harriett Ronning; siblings Charlotte Hoover, Lloyd (Joe) Ronning, and Betty Ronning; father-and-mother-in-law Theodore and Evelyn Bruns, and several brothers-and-sisters-in-law.
David’s memorial service will be held on Friday, April 22 at 11:00 am at Word of Life Lutheran Brethren Church, 9028 51st Ave NE, Marysville WA.
