He was born as the third of seven children in Nuremberg, Germany on June 9, 1955. Being part of a military family, he lived in many places throughout his childhood including Okinawa, Japan and Aberdeen, Maryland where he graduated from high school.
Dean's family settled in Auburn, Washington after his dad retired from the military. He graduated from Green River Community College with a degree in Criminal Justice. On July 8, 1976 Dean married the love of his life, Helga (Schoen) LaFountain whom he met working at the Valley Publishing Newspaper in Kent, Washington. He took her children in to love and raise as his own.
Dean obtained a job with the Federal Government in Law Enforcement within the Bureau of Indian Affairs, where he retired after 37 years. He was an avid reader with a high interest in history, which influenced his oldest grandson's passion to pursue a career in teaching history. Dean also enjoyed baseball, animals and anything to do with space, with one of his favorite shows being Star Trek. He was always a jokester with his children, grandchildren, nephew and nieces. For example he would turn off the car and lights on a dark country road, then tell his children that Bigfoot was coming to get them. He would also act like a wolf coming to get his grandsons in the tent while they were sleeping in the back yard and start chasing his nieces and nephews in the yard acting like he was going to cut them up with a chain saw. He would scare all of these children and yet they would love him more for it.
Dean enjoyed big family gatherings at this parents' house when his parents, siblings, cousins, aunts and uncles would come together to eat, drink, visit, laugh and play cards. He had a deep profound love for all of his pets and would do anything for them, especially his pooches!
Dean is preceded in death by his father, Gabriel LaFountain, mother, Gladys (Martin) LaFountain, brothers, Wayne and Richard LaFountain, daughter, Erika (Scott) Connors and grandson, Michael Dean Eckley.
Dean is survived by his wife, Helga (Schoen) LaFountain, son, Bob (Sheri) Scott, daughter, Brigitte Scott, grandsons, Joshua (Natty) Roberts, Christopher (Alisha) Roberts, Dean Connors, Nathan (Caity) Scott and Matthew Scott, great grandchildren, Christopher and Madisyn Roberts, sisters, Doris (William) Longhurst, Barbara (Jim) James, Brenda LaFountain, and brother, Vernon (Margie) LaFountain.
Dean always supported his children, grandchildren, nephews, nieces and great grandchildren in any way he could. He took pride in all of them and who they all have become.
He was non-judgmental and would accept anyone for who they were. Those who knew and loved him will miss his sense of humor, laughter, and wisdom.
