Doris Bernice Fingarson Smith passed away peacefully on October 15, 2025, at St. Peter’s Providence Hospital in Olympia, Washington, surrounded by her loving family. Born on May 31, 1929, in Arlington, Washington, Doris was the daughter of Pedar Bernard and Evelyn Josephine (Benedict) Fingarson. She was one of six children and grew up in a close-knit, loving home in Arlington. Doris was a gifted seamstress and crocheter, known for her talent in creating beautiful afghans, aprons, bathrobes, dresses, and doll clothes that she lovingly made for family and friends. Throughout her life, Doris held many roles — including work as a telephone operator, model, maid, babysitter, and carpet layer. She also helped carpet Reinell boats and dedicated time to providing care for individuals with disabilities. Her dedication, kindness, and strong work ethic were evident in every aspect of her life. After retiring at the age of 77 in 2011, Doris spent her days gardening, tending to her beloved roses, and filling her home with fresh flowers. She was a devoted Seattle Mariners fan and enjoyed cheering them on throughout each season. In her later years, she also found joy in puzzles and her daily morning ritual of coffee with a sweet roll, sweet bread, or Pop-Tart. Doris was deeply loved for her bright smile, caring heart, and thoughtfulness. She never forgot a birthday or holiday and could always be counted on to make family gatherings warm, joyful, and full of laughter. She is survived by her four daughters: Denise M. Lutes of St. Charles, Missouri; Donda J. Peterson of Marysville, Washington; Tamera D. (Mike) Giovanni of Olympia, Washington; and June K (Rob) Brock of Denton, Texas. She also leaves behind nine grandchildren — Chelsea, Janelle, Daniel, Angelina, Joseph, Vanessa, Jeffrey, Orion, and Summer — as well as 21 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Doris is further survived by her sisters, Sarah Ann (Sally) Lindberg of Marysville, Washington, and Opal Patricia Lindborg of Arlington, Washington, in addition to many nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Donald B. Fingarson; her sisters, June R. Beckett and Marian J. Gustafson; and her son-in-law, Marvin Lutes. Doris’s gentle spirit, radiant smile, and unwavering love for her family will forever be cherished and remembered by all who were blessed to know her.
