

Gordon Ernest Matthews was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on November 20th, 1925 to Emily Maude Matthews and William Henry John Matthews. After graduating from high school in 1943 he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and later on transferred to the Canadian Armed Forces. Gordon then went to work for Manitoba Telephone System. In 1957 Gordon moved with his family to the United States and continued his career in the telecommunications industry with West Coast Telephone, which later merged with General Telephone Electronics Corporation. Gordon enjoyed a long career in the telecommunication industry witnessing much technological change from rotary dial telephones and mechanical switching systems to high-capacity fiber networks, digital switching offices to the beginning of the wireless revolution. Gordon was a lifelong member of the Salvation Army where he was active as a trombone player in the band. Gordon loved his family and faithfully attended and served the members of his local church for many years. Gordon is survived by his children Grant Matthews of La Connor, WA., Blair (Colleene) Matthews of Marysville, WA., Craig (Stacy) Matthews of Marysville, WA., grandchildren Scott (Laura) Matthews, Eric Matthews, Nicole (Brad) Hockett, Tim (Elisabeth) Matthews, Amanda Matthews, Brian Matthews and great-grandchildren, Riley, Matea, Sawyer, River, Oliver and Kennedy. Gordon was preceded in death by his wife Jean of 59 ½ years, parents William and Emily Matthews and his brother Harold (Molly) Matthews.

Shipman Funeral Home – 804 State Ave, Marysville, WA. 98270. Visitation/viewing will be Friday, March19th, 1:00-5:00 PM and Saturday, 9:00 AM -10:00 AM. After Saturday’s viewing the service will start at 10:00 AM. Gordon will be laid to rest at Marysville Cemetery in Marysville, WA.
