She was born in Everett, WA on April 28, 1931 to Earl and Laurel Bales. Hazel graduated from Marysville High School in 1949.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her son Gary Johnson, her brother Gordon Bales, her sister Florence Koch and her brother-in-law Stan Anderson.
She moved to Lake Stevens in the 1950’s and raised her children there.
She worked for many years at the Frontier Village B&M Grocery store and for the company that eventually purchased B&M. She came “out of her shell” while cashiering at B&M and was loved by her customers and co-workers alike.
After retiring, Hazel went on several cruises and took a number of trips to Hawaii and Mexico with her close friend, Alta Merwin.
She was a member of Ebenezer Lutheran Church in Lake Stevens since approximately 1960. She enjoyed the services, the fellowship and the friendships she made. She was incredibly involved with the church and loved helping with functions, memorials and wherever she was needed.
Hazel’s family always came first in her life. We always knew we were loved no matter what. She gave us such a great, fun childhood. She was always there for us. She was so kind and loving.
She loved working in her beautiful yard. She was passionate about picking wild blackberries and then canning blackberry jelly…LOTS of blackberry jelly. She shared her it with her family, friends and anyone who showed her kindness or helped her in some way. She also loved making baked goods which were gifted to family and friends. She was extremely creative and made many crafts which she also gave as gifts to family and friends.
She kept remarkably busy and took many trips with the Everett Senior Center. She also was a member of the Lake Stevens Historical Society and volunteered as a Docent at the Lake Stevens Museum. She was so busy that we often joked about having to make an appointment to see her, but we were incredibly happy that Hazel was living such a full life.
She is survived by her daughter Robin Lindsay (Bob), her niece Charlene Goodson (Ted), nephew Wayne Anderson (Rosie), son Ray Johnson (Susan) and grandsons Darius and Colton Johnson.
She had many wonderful friends. Two of her absolute best friends were DeeAnne Williams and Donna Holm.
We are so thankful for Jordan, nurses Amber and Diana and many others at Continuum Hospice for their wonderful love and support.
We would like to thank the people who loved and cared for her at The Cottages.
In lieu of flowers, we would be grateful for donations to the Alzheimer’s Foundation.
