

Mass of Christian Burial to celebrate her life will be held at 10:00 AM, Wednesday, June 25 at Visitation Church, St. John Paul II Parish in Kewanee with a rosary being recited at 9:30 AM. There will be no visitation. Celebrant will be Fr. Johndamaseni Zilimu. An additional Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 AM, Friday, June 27 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Marysville, WA with a rosary being recited at 10:30 AM. Visitation will be held from 8:30-10:00 AM at Schaefer-Shipman Funeral Home in Marysville, WA prior to the Mass. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Marysville, WA. Memorials may be directed to Visitation Church in Kewanee. Rux Funeral Home in Kewanee and Schaefer-Shipman Funeral Home are in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Szakal was born on January 8, 1917 in Saskatchewan, Canada, the daughter of Frank and Isabelle (Bernat) Bartok. She married Louis K. Szakal on June 21, 1939 in Dixon, CA. He preceded her in death on August 27, 1981. She is survived by two sons, Louis Szakal of San Antonio, TX and James (Judy) Szakal of Bakersfield, CA, one daughter, Bertha (Louis) Betti of Kewanee, IL, eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and one brother Frank Bartok of Kewanee. She was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers, James, Alfred, Albert, Ernest and Leonard.
Mrs. Szakal graduated from high school in 1938 in Dixon, CA. Her hobbies included sewing, dancing, cooking, baking and gardening both vegetables & flowers. She especially enjoyed her roses. She also enjoyed traveling throughout the world. She had traveled to Mexico; Our Lady of Guadalupe in Thanksgiving for special favors, to Europe; Shrine of St. Francis of Assisi, Our Lady of Fatima and Our Lady of Lourdes, to St. Peter’s Basilica pilgrimage in Rome, to Paris; Notre Dame Cathedral, to Copenhagen; Tivoli Gardens and The Little Mermaid Sculpture.
