Born on November 11, 1938, in Brooklyn, New York, James was the beloved son of James Arthur Dooley and Helen Flynn.
A proud veteran of the United States Navy, James served his country with honor before dedicating his career to serving his community as a firefighter with the New York City Fire Department in the Bronx. He was deeply proud of his years with the FDNY and considered his fellow firefighters to be an extension of his family. He was also a devoted member of the American Legion.
James was the devoted husband of Patricia, with whom he shared a lifetime of love, laughter, and unwavering commitment. Together they built a family that was the center of his world.
He was the loving father of Elaine, Big John, Jimmy (Christine), Fred (Yaffa), Kevin (Maile), and Tricia. His greatest joy was being "Pop Pop" to his 13 cherished grandchildren, each of whom brought immense pride and happiness to his life.
James is also survived by his siblings Rita, Eugene, Barbara, and Edward. He was predeceased by his brothers Larry and Gerard.
Throughout his life, James embraced every opportunity to enjoy the outdoors and spend time with those he loved. He was an avid fisherman and boater who also enjoyed golfing, skiing, playing softball, dancing, tinkering with just about anything, and singing.
His faithful companion, Probie, along with the many beloved dogs who shared his life over the years, held a special place in his heart.
Above all, James will be remembered as the strongest, kindest man—a devoted husband, loving father, proud Pop Pop, loyal brother, steadfast friend, and dedicated public servant. His strength, generosity, sense of humor, and unwavering love for his family touched everyone who knew him.
Though he will be greatly missed, his legacy of love, service, and devotion will live on in the hearts of his family, friends, and all whose lives he touched. He will never be forgotten.
