Ruth Sapeta passed away peacefully on December 6, 2025 at the age of 95. Born on Christmas Day in Switzerland, she was known for her adventurous spirit and deep resilience. Her life was defined by hard work, independence, and an unwavering determination.
At 21, Ruth set her sights on New York to begin a new chapter in America. After living and working in Manhattan for a while, she met and married Frank. They eventually moved to Massapequa where together they lovingly transformed a bungalow into the family home that would remain at the heart of her life. True to her strong will, Ruth passed away there, in the place she cherished, on her own terms.
Ruth is predeceased by her beloved husband Frank. She is survived by her loving children, Christy Hasluck, Shirley (Ron) Kennedy, Steve (Carla) Sapeta, and Donna (Mike) Monte. She was a treasured Nana to Samantha, Ronnie, Dana, Marina, Cody, and Caitlan.
A self-proclaimed “chocoholic,” Ruth had a penchant for all things chocolate — especially Lindt. She skied the Alps as a child and enjoyed camping. She found joy in crocheting and sewing, particularly her expertly crafted Barbie doll outfits. Formerly a Girl Guide in Switzerland and then a Girl Scout Leader in the United States, she shared a lifelong love for nature and the outdoors with everyone around her.
She spent the majority of her life as a devoted wife and mother before returning to the workforce as a Teacher’s Aide for the developmentally disabled. In later years, Ruth was an active member of the Red Hat Society and a local bowling league. She also cherished her role as Nana.
The family of Ruth Sapeta deeply appreciates all expressions of sympathy during this difficult time. Since she loved cardinals, may you think of her with a smile whenever you see one perched nearby or flitting through the trees.
Visitation will take place at James Funeral Home, 540 Broadway, Massapequa, New York, on Thursday, December 11, 2025 from 5 – 9 pm, and on Friday, December 12, 2025 from 2 – 4 and 6 – 9 pm. A private cremation will follow on December 13, 2025.
In lieu of flowers, we ask that donations may be made in Ruth’s memory to the Alzheimer Association of Long Island chapter, https://www.alz.org/longisland?form=FUNYWTPCJBN&lang=en-US
