Victor Eugene Buck

Victor Eugene (Gene) Buck passed away on October 19, 2018. Gene was born to Signe Mosbaek and Holger Buck on September 10, 1922 in Askov, Minnesota. Holger was the proprietor of the general store Coop in Askov and later the Ferndale Nursery in Askov where Gene worked until graduating from Askov High School in 1940. He attended University of Minnesota where he earned a BS in engineering in 1944. As a Naval ROTC at UMN, he was deployed to the Pacific Theater where he served as an Ensign on the destroyer escort USS Key that saw combat in the Pacific.
Gene returned after VJ day to his bride Elaine Hubsch Buck, who he met at midshipman school. They settled in Wantagh New York where Gene worked for Republic Aviation. They had two beautiful children, Robert and Linda. Subsequently Gene became a consulting engineer, performing vital projects for the US Navy, Marines, Army and Air Force, and for the development of electrical engineering security and power engineering projects. He served on the NASA team that engineered electrical systems for Gemini orbital missions and the lunar landing module for the Apollo missions to the moon.
Gene was an original owner of an FCCA house from 1950 to 2011 and very active in FCCA for all of his 61 years in Forest City. He was past president of the FCCA and historian of the Forest City Journal and directory. He served his community through Presidency of the Levittown School Board during difficult years for the budget and for academic freedom. He was a perennial home run threat with the Wantagh softball league, where he also pitched his team to a league championship in 1966.
Both his wife Elaine and son Robert preceded him in death. He is survived by his daughter Linda Buck Assael of Lake Oswego, Oregon , son in law Leon Assael, three grandchildren Rachel Tammar of Portland, Oregon , Jeanne Goussev of Bainbridge Island, Washington, and Julia Hier, of West Linn, Oregon, grandsons in law Ben Hier and Evgeniy Goussev and five great grandchildren. Visitation will be on Saturday October 27, 2018 from 10 am -12 pm, at James Funeral Home, 540 Broadway, Massapequa, NY 11758
